back2basics: How good is AVG virus scanner for Windows?

i installed kaspersky after months of avg protection (or "protection"?) and it (k) promptly found 6-7 troyans hidden in some exes and net cache
avg scan said for same hd that is completely clean

but perhaps avg would prevent them do domage if i had tried to run infected programs who knows
