How to get rid of hiccups?
Any suggestions? It's killing me over here. :(
|
Hold your breath. Breath into a paper bag. Drink water upside down. Have someone scare you. Maybe google it to find more. I had a really bad case of the hiccups last week. It was actuall painful.

This always worked in our family. Take one teaspoon of sugar. Dry. Doctor told me about it when my son was a baby and it never failed.
Good luck |
Facts
* Also known as singultus & diaphragmatic spasm. * Hiccups occur when a stimulus triggers the nerves which lowers the diaphragm (the muscle that separates the lungs from the abdomen), i.e. makes the diaphragm contract involuntary causing the person to take in a quick breath of air into the lungs. The nerves involved here are linked to the diaphragm. The air then causes a brief closure of the glottis (located in the voice box, an opening between the vocal cords). The closure produces the "hic" sound for which hiccups are named. * Most hiccups are harmless & they usually stop after a few minutes. Chronic hiccups are very rare. Those that last for months or years are usually called intractable hiccups. * The longest hiccup ever known was experienced by an American pig farmer whose hiccups persisted from 1922 to 1987. * Did you know that a fetus can have hiccups? They actually help strengthen the diaphragm & prepare the fetus for breathing. * Most of the methods used to stop hiccups actually seek to alter the flow of air through the vocal cords so as to stop hiccuping. Causes (common hiccups) * Unknown causes * Hot & spicy food * Carbonated drinks * Nervousness * Sudden laughter * Intense emotions * Fumes * Cold air or cold water Causes (intractable hiccups) * Excessive alcohol consumption * Pneumonia * Abdominal surgery * Asthma * Stroke * Liver/kidney problems * Brain tumor affecting the brain's breathing center * Indigestion * Side effects from certain medication (e.g. muscle relaxants) Home remedies [Remedies to stop rhythmic hiccups, see which are the ones that work for you] * Bend over the waist & drink a glass of water in that bending position. * Munch ginger. * Eat crushed ice. * Drink water quickly. * Suck on slices of fresh lemon. * Swallow a teaspoon of vinegar. * Gargle with cider vinegar. * Hold breath for as long as possible. * Ask someone to give you a fright. * Bring a paper bag close to the mouth then blow into it & breathe in the air from the bag. * Cover each ear with your fingers & press gently for a few minutes. * Squeeze lemon juice to the back of the throat. * Hold on to a small glass (4-ounce) of water & place your mouth to the opposite side of the glass that one would normally drink from. Bend slightly while taking a sip. * Drink canned pineapple juice immediately after the can has been opened. |
breath in fully through your nose then all back out through your mouth

The thing about hiccups is that they like the element of surprise. Think about them, wait for the next one to show up- they don't like that, they'll stop coming! Seriously... |
|
Most common cures are all based on the same concept which generaly is the concentration factor. For me when I get hicups, I find that concentrating on a static object for 2-5mins generaly does the job in stoping them.

push in your belly and drink water at the same time :2 cents:
|
Have someone push the little tab thingies in front of your ears to close them, then drink water.... works everytime...
|
this worked for me very time:
very slowly breathe in untill your lung feels like bursting. then hold the breath as long as you can, then very slowly breathe out and very slowly breathe in again untill your lung is 100% full. hold again as long as you can and slowly breathe out. that should do it |
Pull your tongue for about 10 seconds, gently. This relaxes the muscle that is causing it.
|
scare yourself, or ask somebody to do that...
.or. drink gallons of water :D |

I can give myself the hiccups instantly by eating a bunch of pickled jalepnos.
But the suggestion above works for me every time. slowly hold your breath then slowly let it out breathe deep and slow . ( you will notice everytime you have to gasp or breathe faster the hiccups come back ) |
Find your pulse
|
try breathing under water, that always works :thumbsup
|
too many tricks
|
Works every time
I work in a bar on the weekends and this works every time
take a Lemon wedge and dash some Bitters on it. Suck on it like you are eating an orange wedge. Once you suck all the juice out of the leom the hiccups will be gone. If you don't have bitters around the house use Warstesure sauce. |
spoonful of peanut butter is the best way to fix it
|
a shot of vinegar works well.
