So, my neighbors hired a company to put in a new driveway... (PICS)

And they had some indoor/outdoor carpet glued to their front walkway that they wanted removed, so they asked the company putting in their driveway to remove it and remove the walk and put in a brand new walk to match the driveway. No problem there, right?

Well, apparently the driveway company sub-contracted the work to someone else for the walkway.. And this afternoon my nanny comes in the house screaming that the neighbors house is on fire. Well, that's not right, what the?

So, apparently the people they sub-contracted were using GASOLINE to disolve the glue on the indoor/outdoor carpeting, and one of them, not thinking tossed his cigarette onto the carpet.. WHOOSH, up went the carpet, the front door, the wall, the insolation, the roof, the garage.. Instead of alerting the homeowners (WHO WERE HOME!) and calling the fire department, they started collecting their evidence and TOOK OFF! But apparently forgot the garbage bags full of gasoline soaked carpet (The police and fire department will definitely be filing MANY charges, including arson and criminal neglegence).

Anyhow, 4 hours later the contractor they'd actually hired gets in contact with them, says they'll work something out without having to deal with insurance (They don't have any) and that it really isn't their problem if the sub-contractor burned their house, his company was doing the driveway and nothing else. I think not?

Anyhow, here's a couple pics, what a horrible experience for these people, lucky they were home or that house would have never survived.

To think people still rarely check if companies working at your house have insurance.

There's 11 houses in the area getting work done by this company, I think they'll want to see the results of their handywork :)

Hell most people do not even think about it. Guy down the road was using a yard maintmence person to cut the grass and so forth. Some kid was riding his bike and apparently decided to use the ramp on the back of the yard guys trailer as a jump. Truck and trailer were in the property owners drive way. Needless to say the kid bit it hard when trying to angle off the ramp. Knocked out most of his front teeth, broke his arm, and suffered a concusion. Lawn mower guy was not carrying insurance (but got the job cause he was cheaper than most). Property owner ended up being named in a suit along with the mower guy. Home owners insurance paid out and proceeded to kick the guy off the policy. They fought for some time about even paying out at all since the home owner was neglictfull when they hired the lawn guy.

Ehm... what the fuck?! Isn't the idiot kid trying to make that jump responsible for his own stupidity?!

In a common sense world where lawyers do not rule and people are not all out to play the lawsuit lottery yes. In reality though the answer is no. Someone gets injured on your property your stuck. Now in the event the mower guy had insurance he would of been stuck, but the homeowner decided that 20.00 per week was better than the insured guy who charges 35.00.

pornguy 05-11-2005 04:38 PM

that one goes right along with the burglar that was on the roof of a house that he intended to burglarize. He fell through the skylight, and broke his arm on the kitchen counter. He sued the owner of the house and got like 50k. He was a convicted burglar with tools in his possesion the day of the incident.

Gotta love the attorneys.

gecko 05-11-2005 04:49 PM

I would counter-sue the parents for negligence and also file a trespassing report with the police. Wouldn't hurt to get social services involved either.

Spunky 05-11-2005 06:25 PM

Damn..fucking rookies could have burned a lot more than just that
