computer locks up

why does it lock up?

I blew all the dust out of it, made sure the fan on the cpu works good, changed the power supply. Its not doing anything new or cpu-intensive. No viruses or spyware. It will run for maybe 30 minutes, or sometimes for a couple hours, then it freezes.

Any ideas?

Run Everest and you'll be able to get a gleen if its hardware related.

Mr Pheer dust can sometimes get into pci slots I have found. I was once replacing a graphics card and I blew all the dust out(so I thought) but some got into the slot and when I put the card back in the connection was poor and my pc locked up. So I don't know if this will help but my suggestion is to make sure your slots are clean from dust and all cards/ram is inserted and seated properly.

Good luck man , hope you get it going soon.

Indeed. Everest rocks. Most comprehensive program I've found to tell you every detail about everything in your PC.

And the best part of all its FREEWARE! :winkwink:

Mr Pheer 05-10-2005 09:32 PM

I had this problem with my WinME Compaq... the hard drive (pretty sure that's what it was) was grinding really bad one day and it was never the same after that. It would run and then lock up out of nowhere, so I'm guessing surface damage. It was under warantee at the time too but I was too lazy to bring it in... so I left it like that. I still boot it up once in a blue moon.

KMR Stitch 05-10-2005 11:10 PM

At what point does it lockup??

Random points? After 4 mins?

It can be Powersupply => Memory sticks => Shorting on the motherboard => Video card => Harddrive is going bad => Cd burner has a conflict with a .dll while trying to load (nero did this)
