why is it retarded? I want to extend my desktop across 4 screens instead of 2. I run alot of apps and I need space.

extended desktop.... 4 screens running in sync. 4 screens showing the exact same thing is useless.

You need a desktop pc for stuff like this thats why.

there may be some sort of screen multiplexer or external video card that may handle something like that, that would require multiple video controllers, I have never seen one that runs on a laptop...

I don't know if it's possible to make using laptop, but it's possible on desktop:
Motherboard which supply SLI mode for graphic cards + 2 graphic cards which can connect 2 monitors.
