Google Web Accelerator: Say goodbye to a healthy chunk of 404

I was reading Jup Z's post about google's new Web Accelerator beta. I have checked it out and it seems to work pretty well :thumbsup :thumbsup

the one thing I did notice is that if a page happens to 404 it will go to a custom 404 page from google that suggests possible reasons, and then offers the google link so they can search for what they are looking for.

Anyone think this could have a major effect on 404 traffic??

discuss.

Hmmm. But what if my site generates it's own custom 404. Will google rob me of that?

uno 05-06-2005 11:24 AM

It didn't do that to me. I just checked on a few of my sites.

There has to be a way to block Google from stealing our 404 traffic..

Do you have the Web Accelerator beta installed on your computer?

Theo 05-06-2005 11:25 AM

thats hijacking n' they cant do that and in reality they dont do it.

they just redirect to google search terms like:

dgdfgfdgdfg
dfgdfgdfg52rfsdgnmo]esdv
sdf35 9efjdozvpzc

:dDDDDDD

Well, yes there is. Prevent apache from sending any 404 error headers.

Read this.

Its pure evil. Like anything Google brings out lately.

It's easy as fuck to block google from intercepting your 404 pages

Mack 05-06-2005 11:29 AM

I may have spoke to soon. Maybe it's not a 404 issue. but this is the page I get when going to a few pages.

Error: web site not found

The web host is not accessible.

Possible sources of this error:

* The host name is invalid
* There was a DNS error
* The web site may be unavailable
* You may not be connected to the internet

Please edit the URL, or search for it using Google.

Google Web Accelerator version 0.2.52.65-pintail.a
Windows XP 5.1

May not be a 404 thing.....

Franck- thank you for your post. as I thought, I have uninstalled this app.

I dunno, I am glad in a way that I am the only one with this problem it appears.

Much like the application that is gone from my pc, so is the problem.

What does that mean? You just let your 404 go to the default page? Smart.
