Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski is reduced in rank

...because she was the CG during the Abu Ghraib prison scandal.

Quote:

That means Karpinski is the only general to be disciplined thus far. The demotion means her career in the military, where officers must rise in rank or leave, is effectively over. Messages left at her home in Hilton Head (search), S.C., and with her attorney were not immediately returned.

The Senate Armed Services Committee has said it intends to hold hearings soon to assess whether senior Defense Department civilian and military leaders were adequately held accountable for Abu Ghraib.

What did he get demoted to?

I know those General ranks are hard to acquire so he probably will never wear a star again.

It is a female General and she was reduced to Colonel. This will end her career and I am satisfied that she will be leaving the military shortly.

Why would she quite? A colonel is only one rank down from General right?

Yes it is...but in the military you either go up in rank or you are forced to get out. She will never be promoted again. In her case I suspect she will resign. BTW this applies to E ratings as well as O ratings.

There are lots of Colonels who retire and aren't forced to resign.

Billy Mitchell, one of the early pioneers of the USAF had that happen to him once...

but in this case, if she knew about the goings on it was very well deserved...

Of course there are...because their career paths were on track and they were never passed over for promotion and more specifically never demoted.
