Can a person just develop diabetes?

I'm stupid on the subject. Scary to think about, is it possible to just develop diabetes later in life or is it strictly a genetic thing?

yes .... you develop it

Nicky 05-04-2005 08:17 AM

you definatley can develop it....

HpicAnn 05-04-2005 08:18 AM

You can develop it depending on your daily diet, by that we should eat healthy without too much sugar.

I'm not worried about it myself, I weigh a buck forty...but my stepdad is a diabetic because of his obesity.

a better way to put it is...

he is diabetic because of his diet.
he is obese because of his diet.
the two go hand in hand and are both caused by diet.

i did not mean that diabetes cannot be genetic. it obviously can be of course. but diabetes does not cause obesity. a diet high in refined carbs and sugars causes insulin resistence in your body which then causes both.

axelcat 05-04-2005 09:07 AM

sugar intake is key

Yes.... It is genetic as well.... being overweight helps but is not the only thing that counts

I go up and down in weight all the time and that is meant to be the worst thing

Gabriel 05-04-2005 09:23 AM

Woman who are pregant are at risk for diabetes as well.

Diet and genetics. Usually if you lose the weight the diabetes can subside, unless of course its genetic.

I was diagnosed when I was 15. I have type 1 juvinile. No one in my family has it. I actually developed diabetes from a common cold that broke down my imune system and gave me the gift of diabetes.
Most people who get in in their later years is type 2 which is mostly controlled by pills and diet

it's called Type II, and yes, you develop that kind...

diet, activity and weight loss in general can correct it

I have a very old lady relative who was diabetic for years, long story short, she got in a car accident, lost weight and now NO longer has diabetes from pure weight loss (diet) and some physical activity...

I had a friend that found out he was a diabetic, all kinds of stuff went wrong with him them around 2 years later he was dead. and yes he was over wt.

GatorB 05-04-2005 10:46 AM

when I was in the 7th grade a kid that lived up the street went into a dibetic coma for 3 days and had to start taking insulin after that. No sign of anything wrong beforehand. One day normal the next a diabetic.
