i dont speak hebrew - but as far as i understand (am a historian in my free time) some theories are that the "beast" was the emperor nero ...

in hebrew letters have a numerical value, and depending on how you spell his name (nero caeser) in hebrew, the numerical value will equal 616 or 666.
