Starting a paysite

I wanted to get some advice on starting a paysite. I was wondering how much is enough to start a small paysite. I Have $2000 to invest in it. I need to have it designed for me. I also thought of buying a paysite template and using that but now sure i should. I can get the front end done for about 3 hundred bucks. any advice would be cool. ALso i know someone is going to mention the question ARE YOU A NEWBIE or HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING THIS? Answer to that is i have making websites for about 3 years but have never made a paysite. sorry bout tha caps but that is such annoying question. The reason I want to hire a designer or do template is because I never really mastered photoshop to the level of some the paysites i seen out there. Any advice would be cool thanks.

why would you start a 'small' paysite?
why dont you make a big AVS (AEN) site?

bhutocracy 05-03-2005 07:42 PM

You should maybe start doing AVS or something to start out and understand the way everything works and build a little bank of traffic before you lose your $2000 cold.

I guess if I include content, and all my equipment that I use for shooting my content, I've spent $20k+ on my site. And I wish I had started with more, to be honest. Remember also, the $750 VISA fee. Don't think of going into the paysite business without that.

Sly 05-03-2005 07:44 PM

Pardon me for asking, but do you already have a source of traffic?

beta-tester 05-03-2005 07:44 PM

I think you'll need at least 2K$ only for kicks ass content.
And you'll need much more for design and STRONG promotion (you want to make some money, don't you).
Well, personaly I think you'll need at least 5k$ for decent paysite which can be nice money maker in the future :thumbsup

Again, like I said. We can hook you up with a good Kick ass content package AND design for $2k out the door. But I agree, you will need to pay the Visa fee, and get hosting etc on top of that.

I do not want to produce my own content and the visa registration fee is not a problem becuase the people at verotel say they don't collect it on the ticketsclub accounts.

bhutocracy 05-03-2005 07:48 PM

Other than that your only real hope is maybe doing a single girl site and paying the girl a % of the take.. which will be fuck all for months and months especially with no experience and only $1500 for promotion... assuming you don't have to buy a camera, hosting and promotional stuff like banners.

For $2000 you need some elements free.. content and design mainly (and your own traffic sources really but...). So either get someone to work on commission which won't work out in most cases because you don't have the resources to provide a timely return. And design simple avs stuff yourself.. or even the paysite. It doesn't have to be 3d effects and gradients to sell especially on your budget.

You're probably better off pressing the auto-timer on your camera and filming yourself fucking plush toys and blow up pool toys and putting it behind an avs than buying a $300 design, $800-$1000 of content and 800 in traffic promotional stuff, hosting etc.

Entropy 05-03-2005 07:57 PM

go with Content Producers offer...it's your best option at this point with the amount of cash you have

bhutocracy 05-03-2005 07:58 PM

If you don't want to produce content... then i'd just stick to avs with that budget.
Maybe i'm sounding a little defeatist or being too down.. but you are competing with 100000 other people with far more money buying the same cheap ass content and you are offering far, far less.

If you produce your own stuff you at least have content no one else has. Maybe if you pick up a fucked up weird niche you could do it.. but you won't be able to get enough content. Bleh.. Im serious about the plush toy sex. I bet you could make more money doing that than buying 2k worth of design and old content.

for that kind of money i don't think you could start a pay site

I would make the following suggestion
1. find a sponsor that liciences their content as feeds ie top bucks
2. pick one of their sites (which sells the content as a feed) and build a custom tour and use the direct to join link.
3. start promoting it normally using the partnership program
4. when you have built up a good size re occuring revenue (enough to cover the hosting, feed cost, billing processing, shooting custom content) switch the back end to your own site, and fill the eps with your custom content
