ORCHARD PARK, New York (AP) -- Ten years after a firefighter was left brain-damaged and mostly mute during a 1995 roof collapse, he did something that shocked his family and doctors: He perked up.

"I want to talk to my wife," Donald Herbert said out of the blue Saturday. Staff members of the nursing home where he has lived for more than seven years raced to get Linda Herbert on the telephone.

They don't know if its permanent. I hope this man continues to remember and improve. He thought he was down for 3 months. When he saw his 13 year old child he was shocked. Amazing.

That is crazy, this is the sad part though ... "Herbert's sons were 14, 13, 11 and 3 when he was injured."

That means he missed 3 graduations, possible marriages, possible grandkids being born, proms, sports ... I just can't imagine waking up after 10 years and knowing I missed out on a huge part of my sons lives. Just sad to think about ... At least he has one who is now 13 that he can enjoy the things that he missed with the others.

and asks about sonyn & cher.. when he gets his answer
he purposelly goes backinto coma

I disagree. Of course he missed a lot of his families big events. However, now he is given the opportunity to be there for all the upcomming events!
He may not have been present for "that wedding" or "this birth".
Now he gets to listen to the live account told straight from one of his loved ones mouth. If you ask me that is awesome! What a gift he and his family have been given.
Life is SO precious. I am so happy his family gets this 2nd chance.

There are grades of brain damage. We don't know ANY facts related to this case that would at all infer that Shiavo would have "perked up" like this guy. All we hear is brain damaged.. which is like saying "cancer" - your survival rate could be 99% or 0.001% depending on the case.
