Question: Power Supplies.... Did the CompUsa guy bullshit me...

Seriously , I asked the geek which power supply would work for a Dell.... as soon as I said Dell he said they had propieotry shit.. which i think is BS...

Anyways who has a Dell and upgraded power supplies??

The little prick i think was clueless or whatever ..

It looks like the MAY be proprietary.
If you are going to replace it, start here:

Get a quiet one. :)

Ah, the nerd might be correct.

"**Special Note to Owners of Dell Computers:** If your Dell computer was manufactured after August 1998, it may require the use of a proprietary Dell power supply. Although the Dell power supply looks like a standard ATX, it is a non-standard PSU that cannot be replaced with a standard power supply alone. Because of this design difference your Dell Power Supply may need a Dell to ATX power supply converter in order to be replaced with any of our standard ATX Quiet Power Supplies.

I hate it when companies do that shit...just to make sure you upgrade through them.

Spunky 04-30-2005 08:33 PM

It probably has to be due to warranty purposes

Digipimp 04-30-2005 08:33 PM

of course dell computers use proprietary shit, all the major name brands do. they buy in bulk from the parts makers and have it made to the specs of their case, almost all of it slightly modified so as to only fit their product.

Tango 04-30-2005 08:35 PM

Dell and their cases and connectors are usually proprietary :(

Worst case don't bring your computer to the local CompUSA or BestBuy these guys are usually 110% clueless

Find a local Chinese place or place that specializes in component sales - you'll have a ton better luck :thumbsup

jonpotz 04-30-2005 09:53 PM

some guy at comp usa told my dad that he couldn't buy a floppy drive because his computer was a dell. i purchased 1 for 5$ off the net (nondell) and it fit right in.

as for the power supply, that might be a different story.

Ycaza 04-30-2005 09:59 PM

dell does a bunch of weird shit, but i have taken their boards and rigged em to work in other caseswith other parts. best to have a white box and upgrade as you please. Hit me up and I will build you a special one.
