YARGH! A serious post from a goofy pirate... and finally me Africa [PICS]

YARGH!

Pirate mode disabled.

This post is about organization. My next serious post will deal with the confusion within the AVS site building community.

I have a number of projects going on at once, all the time.

I used to have 50 "to do" lists on my desktop. I had so much to do all the time, I got overwhelmed thinking about it all and I ended up wasting a lot of time. Over the years, as I added each new site or business I found the lists getting longer, and longer.

I found some software (dotproject) that has increased my productivity ten fold.

Project management software might seem silly if it's just you, but it isn't.

I can add all my projects in, ideas I have, etc. I assign priorities to the tasks within an individual project, and weightings for percent done.
I can assign tasks to anyone, one person, or a team.

At a glance I can see what needs doing, and what's been done. This particular software is free, but extremely powerful. You can share notes, files, etc. It has a forum built in as well.
It's server based so the software can be accessed from anyone anywhere.

Now each day I log in, and just start knocking them off. My employees do the same. There is a great sense of satisfaction when a task, or project is completed.

If you find yourself thinking about what you should be doing, or what you need to be doing...
do yourself a favor and start organizing your time more effectively by using project management software. One simple thing can make all the difference.

Pirate mode re-enabled:

As promised last week, here be the pics from me trip to Africa. It be a huge conty nent, worthy of many maps. YARGH! Enjoy...

While the Lawnmover man loaded up me eye patches, we posed for this pic before we took off for our trip. Theo was nervous about flyin' and said some prayers. I told him stop bein' a pussy, and clubbed him with me parrot.

Shortly after we arrived I was eager to get back in me Ocean. We chartered this shanty 'o' death to get in me scuba time.

http://www.xsitespinner.com/africa/02.jpg

YARGH! The seas of Africa, have much treasure beneath it's waves. I got me a moby bone while diving it's depths.

http://www.xsitespinner.com/africa/03.jpg

Once we were back on me mother earth, I paid a visit to me good buddy, Leo. He rides a mean ATV, and knows some good spots for hookers.

http://www.xsitespinner.com/africa/04.jpg

It be a fun day ATVin', but Africa be a big continent, and we had much maps to be drawin'. We came a cross a tribe of Masai, they liked me Cappy cap, and wanted a picture with me, and "The fruity fruit"
They gave me a traditional head mask to wear for me picky pic. It made me head itch, so I stabbed them.

YARGH! Next we be off on the dusty roads toward the stoney block triangles of Egypt. Theo overheated, and drank too much holy water. We had to stop so he could tinkle. It be a good spot for it. He blessed the river with his yellow juice.

http://www.xsitespinner.com/africa/06.jpg

Here we be on a humpy lumps. I didn't much care for the ride, and ended up killing me camel. Our guide was upset, so I stabbed him.

http://www.xsitespinner.com/africa/07.jpg

This next pic be me favorite. We found this long necker, and clicked one off.

http://www.xsitespinner.com/africa/08.jpg

It be a great trip but I'm glad to be back swabbin' the deck's of me good ship Chio.

YARGH! Now I need to give birth to me turds. Too many Orca blubber sandwitches!

AHOY!

chio is the best board personality

2HousePlague 04-28-2005 06:48 PM

Am I the only one whose breath is literally taken away when Chio disengages Pirate Mode?

It's amazing to discover, for being given this unusual opportunity by Chio, how completely incomplete what we perceive of each other as GFY Personae can be.

Thanks for the link to the PM program. Coming from a CPM background, I've been looking for a basic PM program, other than MS Project. :thumbsup

<African trip response>
Great pics, but I really expected to see Theo on wild safari, and maybe a some ole fashioned pirate poaching (getting some tusky tusks to decorate the crows nest and such).

I said so because you had begun a response to a business response (which, I would presume, dictates disablement of Pirate Mode) with "YARGH" -- but then it's also true that you mixed modes in the sentence, too.

Don't relax your standards just because you've won our love!

Chio, I have tried a bunch of online based PIM's, schedulers, etc., biggest drawback is the info is not usable on a pda or laptop. Does this one have any kind of integration for a local machine?

Using project management software also forces on you the discipline of assigning resources and whether you are a one-man band or have employees, that in turn forces you to recognize whether you actually have those resources. It is way too easy in this business to charge off in a dozen different directions and end up half-doing lots of things, instead of dealing with a smaller number of projects well.

SeniorX 07-17-2005 06:18 AM

hey Chio, excellent post about the Project Management script. We used it, or something very similar, 3 or so years ago. It's good when you share all tasks as a team, but in a one-man operation or when everybody has their own tasklists, we found it just takes too much time to visit the webpage, log in, create and update tasks and change status's, 20 tasks a day would equal to 30-40 mins wasted.

What we currently use is this - 2 text files on desktop, "To Do" and "Done". Tasks in the "to do" have a "-" in front of them, and when you finish the task, change it to "/" and copy&paste to "Done" file. Takes 5-10 secs. Keeping the "Done" file instead of deleting the done tasks gives you the same accomplishment feeling like the online project manager and saves a lot of time.

About the percentage of a task done in the online project manager - just divide big tasks into as many small tasks as you like, increases the feeling of accomplishment and productivity even more. :2 cents:
