tax questions
I am a foreign student in US on F-1 visa. I have a website and make about $1000 a month. I had never thought about the tax issue before. But with this kind of income, I start to worry about how to file the tax forms.
I was using 1040NR form for nonresident alien. What form should I use now? And how should I file it? More importantly, is it legal for me to earn this money? I didn't keep all the tabs for my checks http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/frown.gif but I did record them on my notebook. Will that be enough to be shown as proof? I heard there will be a 1099 form coming from my sponsors. What if some of my sponsors don't send the form? I know nothing about the tax law. So please educate me and show my as many details as you can or want to. Any help would be very appreciated, especially if you know about the nonresident alien tax law or have experience on it. Thank you very much. Eric |
in the U.S., it is customary for legal alians to figure out 30% of their total income and then send that amount to someone else who is in the same type of business and is a U.S. citizen. That is the current IRS code. If you like, you can just send that amount to me...that will take out tyhe hassle of having to find someone else to send it to. You will have to cover the wire fee though to send that to me. Im a nice guy, but not that nice

Go to a local accountant (check yellow pages or ask friends). Ask them if they handle foreign students and self-employment taxes. They are trained to tackle the weird world of IRS & their paperwork. You'll be much happier letting them do your taxes & you won't have headache.

I had a guy work for me few years back who was a student. If I recall right as a F1 visa holder you are not allowed to work more than 10 or 20 hrs a week. That is the only restriction. There are no restriction on how much you can earn.
My advice is keep your papers straight , because they come in handy when you want to work later in life. Call H&R block ask them about it. Or you can even check with your student advisor in college. |
