IST.ISTbar.ActiveX on startup - how to remove?

ANyone have this problem?

every time I start my machine up, microsoft anti-spyware gives me the warning that it is trying to install....and I click remove, but when I start up again it does it again

I have used:
Microsoft Anti-Spyware
Symantec IST Toolbar remover
Adaware
Spybot
Spyware Doctor
Spyware Blaster
Searching the registry and removing all IST references

NOTHING has stopped this thing from trying to install

that one used to be pretty easy, but I guess its gotten harder.

CTRL - ALT - DEL, open up the task manager, got processes and kill anything IST related and things that look suspect started by your USER name.

Unplug the computer from the internet and then do the following. Run MSCONFIG and remove any instance calling for unknown programs or IST in the startup area.

Run you MS Anti-Spyware + Antivirus Simultaneously. I've found that some times when you Anti-Virus holds a suspect file in Quarantine or Temp to see what you want to do, thats when your Spyware removal program should be able to remove it from the system.

Hopefully that works. There should be a folder in Program Files to delete too.

I got hit with that stuff.
NASTY as all hell. I had to format the system to get it off. NOTHING worked.

Did you make sure to turn off the restore point settings before using the anti-spyware stuff?

To turn off Windows XP System Restore FIRST

Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"

now .. start > run > msconfig > boot INI tab > choose safeboot with networking

reboot

Run Microsoft Antispyware

If this does not help let me know I will give you some other options

:thumbsup

System restore has saved me a couple reformats :2 cents:

Like said above, always run cleaners in safe mode, they can't remove files that are in use when Windows is running.

e-god 04-27-2005 01:25 PM
