SE question

May you have two meta description tags on your page? I believe you can... And if so, which one will be considered for SEs?

ssp 04-26-2005 05:15 AM

What? No.

SE's crawler picks the best description out of the 2.

OK, You're right. First of all, what's your goal? What are you trying to accomplish using two meta keyword tags?

Because SE's don't look at meta tags the way they used to. Simply cramming buttloads of keywords in your meta tags won't improve your ranking.

It's better to use fewer keywords, which are really revelant to your page's content.

Also, I'll give you a free bit of advice. Use the keywords in your keyword-tag in your decription tag as well.

I know about the keyword tag, that is not the issue. I simply found one of my sites with 200+ indexed pages, which (due to the lack of meta descr tags) were shown as same pages on Google's result pages. I would want to include meta tags for their category listings, but also for individual pages, and hence the pages would carry double meta description tags... that's just due to the architecture.

I just was wondering if anyone knew what the effect was, whether the first meta description tag was considered in displaying the search result description :)

I know that SEs don't consider them like they used to, but for displaying the search result, they are still in use.

I erroneously did this with a batch of pages once. G displayed the first set of description meta tags. I have no reason to believe that G would display the "best" description.

No worthwhile SE will waste processing power trying to work out the 'best' description tag for those unable to write good HTML. They'll simply use the first or one at random but that said...SE's so very rarely take notice of METAs these days it's pointless worrying about it too much. Once in a very blue moon Googley may have a brain fart and use a meta description but it's the exception rather than the rule.

You really can't count on SEO anyway. You can go from page one to not listed in a day. The only traffic you can really rely on is bought traffic. And then it depends on who you bought it from.

You have your bookmarks and trades too, but that's not fresh eyeballs on your page.

Really want to make money in this biz without investing what it takes to comeup with a real pay site? Learn how to do galleries that convert and buy traffic for them. Quickest way for someone with little cash to make a go of it.

Do your own AVS makes sense too if you have something that really kicks ass for an AVS... You got it, buy your traffic for the AVS site too. Damn hard to find trades that work these days.
