Once again I am impressed with Brazilian cinema

I just finished watching the prison movie Carandiru and once again I am left thinking that some of the best cinema of recent years is coming out of South and Central American and in particular Brazil. Heck, I am watching so much of it these days that I am actually starting to have faveorite Brazilian actors.

So, I recommend Carandiru for those who liked City of God (though this isn't AS good as it by any means) or who don't mind a bit of violence mixed in with their drama. Think Shawshank with less sugar coating and based on true happening.

Dead Alive

need i say more???

;)

I want to see City of God... I caught the last 30 minutes or so on IFC and it looked like a really good movie

Sarah_Jayne 04-25-2005 11:18 AM

too bad you didn't see it from the start so that the end was a mystery.

Fletch - Aussie cinema was really good at the end of the 90's but I haven't seen much since. I am sure that is just ignorance though.

pxxx 04-25-2005 12:46 PM

I would like to see that.

GoodGuy 04-25-2005 12:50 PM

yeah, carandiru and cidade de deus, are both great movies.

Carandiru director is from Argentina. Hector Babenco.

Amores Perros is another great film from Mexico.

I liked Central Station too though I know it can be a bit slow for a lot of people but in many ways it was what kicked off this generation of Brazilian cinema. It was the first I saw and made me look for more.
