Just another reason to not skydive...

Skydiver hits a plane and dies

DELAND, Florida (AP) -- A skydiver lost both his legs when he struck the wing of a plane as he came down and later died from his injuries, officials said.

Cinematographer Albert "Gus" Wing III had already opened his parachute when he hit the plane that he had jumped from Saturday morning over an airport in DeLand, central Florida, police said. His legs were severed at the knees.

He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Fourteen other skydivers were in the air at the time of the accident, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Holly Baker said. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board were investigating.

Mike Johnston, general manager of Skydive DeLand, said the accident was not common.

"There are about 15 million jumps every year," Johnston told The Daytona Beach News-Journal. "I only know of one other case where a sky diver was struck by an airplane."

There was a guy from the air force parachute squad on maury pauvich that lost both legs after running into his friend midair doing stunts with smoke canisters attached to both legs.. both his legs went flying off with the air canisters still attached and spewing smoke. On the show he did his first skydive since losing both his legs..

Imagine landing on the stubbies after losing both your legs..

swedguy 04-24-2005 07:51 PM

I've dived before, it's a lot of fun. But how you can get hit by the plane that you jumped out off, is beyond me. Like FAR beyond me. You jump out behind the wings, and unless the airplane turns around and chases you... there is no way in hell you can get hit under normal circumstances. Definitely the pilot's fault imo.

The dude was a 'cinematographer'. I'm sure the plane coming back was planned, but he got more than he bargained for.

Vitasoy 04-24-2005 09:45 PM

Damn... that's not the way to go. :(

Verbal 04-24-2005 09:47 PM

That's a silly reason not to go skydiving. I've done it several times and it's been by far one of the coolest things I've ever experienced. You might as well say you're not going to drive your car anymore because somebody in Kentucky died driving to go pick up some milk.

It can happen because once you're out of the plane, the plane dives back down to get more jumpers. When you open your canopy, you slow right down while the plane continues to dive down. Yes, deffinetly the pilot's fault.

I jumped from Sky Dive Deland on my 18th birthday. It was a lot of fun I even met the owner of the place very cool Biker looking dude.

pxxx 04-24-2005 09:53 PM

That has got to suck big time.

Sosa 04-24-2005 09:56 PM

Well duh - I know he won't fly off to Lala-Land after your jump out of the cabin... but usually the flight routes back don't cross the jumper's path down, I am sure there is a rule for that.

Probably it was a stunt gone wrong, the whole cinematographer thing does make sense to me. Shit out of luck either way.

exactly...serious fuckup there...no way a plane should be anywhere near the path of someone skydiving out of it

Well you have to figure the plane is landing on a runway, which is going to be right next to the landing area of the drop zone, most likely. Sooner or later both the plane and the jumper are ending up in the same place, right? It's just a matter of timing, and clearly bad timing in this matter.
