ouch...i once did burn my lips rather badly on the hot shot glass from one of them. Word of advice - make it the FIRST drink of the night.

I think thats the way you are supposed to do it.... But its certainly more fun to watch the other way.

When I was 18, I used to do them all the time without blowing out the flame.

I remember going to a lounge when I was about 25 and looking at the damn thing thinking I must have been crazy. I must have let it sit there too long debating about blowing out the flame. When I finally DID the shot with the flame still burning, the shot glass made a nice burn imprint on my face. Noone including myself noticed for about half an hour though when it started to show up.

It didn't hurt, I just felt stupid. Not as stupid as posting that here, but stupid nonetheless.
