Tragic domain story
A friend of mine owned a domain LAMER.COM.
Now he was the original owner of the domain and had for a long time. Out of the blue this guy started calling him wanting to buy it. After a few days he talked and amoungst friends they called the guy that called almost ever 3 hours "Lamer" since he wouldnt take no for an answer. SO finally my friend gets on the phone and say awright I will sell it to ya for $30,000. Lamer within minutes had papers faxed money goes through escrow done deal. Everyone was happy my friend was stked that he actually sold the dmain fr such a high price. A couple days later LAMER.COM is typed in by one of the IT guys. Lamer turned out to be a huge Cosmetics company in France. Alot more would have been on the table with some research. |
30k isn't bad....
|
__ouch...
|
I think he was lucky to get $30k ... nothing tragic about that
|
Now that's the definition of OWNED.
he should have done some research, got higher. |
Why is it tragic your friend was really pleased with $30k. Lamer.com isnt a great domain name.
|
well its called both buyer and seller beware
always know what your buying and what your selling most importantly - to whom your selling to or buying from |
... I want 30k for a domain too :helpme :-)
|
SO let's all go out hunting for french cosmetic company names
|
Your friend should buy all of us a few Pints ;-)

Nothing tragic about that. Good payday for that lame name.
Every heard of WIPO? |
30k is fine for a domain like that...sure, he COULD have gotten higher.....
woulda shoulda coulda... life moves on, tell him to build something with that 30k that makes him 30k a month and it won't be so tragic! :) |
la mer is a division of estee lauder
|
i still dont think $30k is tragic though, it is a corporate name, not a brand, not sure how much value it would have to them anyhow
he probably could have gotten $50k though |

I built there first website. No Joke along with some or Nortel's. |

This is when paying attention in school pays off. La Mer is french for the The Sea. Would have made sense to look and see what was up with french companies but 30K isnt bad. I'd still be happy with it.

It wouldn't have to be used in bad faith: They could wipo you and ask questions later. While current decisions are favoring the victims of reverse hijacking more and more, they could easily take that name away under the right circumstances.

$30k sounds great imo. I am not saying it would have made it buy they could ahve sued for it lol.

But... I just looked at wipo.com... Ummm obviously not the same WIPO that I did some stuff with LOL:) The WIPO I did biz with was Nortel's umm Outsourcing Plant in India. Oh and WIPO they didnt have a chance. He was the Original registrant. And Lamer is quite an American term to broad to call in WIPO. |

You got $30,000 for a domain and you feel ripped off?? OMG. greedy!!
|
The thing is that you could've said $50K and they could've told you to forget it and you'd be without anything.
I'm trying to make you feel better, ha ha. |
A lot of you guys don't seem to understand that if you're squatting on a brand which has global trademarks, you can have the name taken away from you without bad faith. Up until recently, the decisions favored big companies, mostly American ones, and you didn't need to do anything but just own the name to get nailed.
The very fact that your friend negotiated with them IS bad faith and they could have taken your friend to WIPO and got the name for $1500 application fee. Tell your friend he should be happy as a pig in do do. |
Greed is UGLY
30k for a domain name is more than fair. I bet your friend never made a dime from the site until it was sold... I will sell any of my domains (except for my paysites) for 30k |

So the guy owns a companys name and SHOULD HAVE extorted them for way more than the domain is worth? right...

It's called business. Not knowing or not being informed can be costly. A little research in understanding value is important. On the flip side I think he got robbed. |
I own ialien.com I know its valuable.
But to whom is the question. I know what it's worth to me and so far its above 10K. I have few ther valuable domains as well I know the value of each. |

That would mean that no word could serve as a trademark if that word was also found in the dictionary. This would be a nasty surprise for such companies as Apple computers, Delta airlines, Dell computers, etc. Past rulings have clearly shown that dictionary words are not automatically generic in nature. As for the tragedy at hand here, I agree that nobody wants to leave money on the table. But $30,000 is a premium price to be paid for that domain. I would be happy. |
lol 30k for this domain is some good cash anyways you should always check out this deals since people won't just give you this amounts of cash if this won't be a good deal for them.. but 30k is a really good sum for the domain.
