    I hope the new pope gets assassinated

    Ratzinger has also attacked rock music, calling it "the expression of basic passions."
    The newly elected Pope Benedict XVI, who turned 78 on Saturday, will be expected to maintain John Paul II's deeply conservative line. He has railed against "greed" and "self-sufficiency" within the Roman Catholic Church and rejects any attempt to modernise.
    He has rejected the ordination of women and marriage for priests, and opposes homosexuality and communism -- and he has never been afraid of upsetting political sensibilities.

                                                              I'm inclined to believe your quoted info. From my recollection, Pope Jean Paul II was named pope back in the 70's, not right after the war. As a kid I saw all the "pope" hooplah on TV, and back then we only had about 4 channels, it was on ALL of them.

                                                              I do know that the man who was pope during WW II was a badass bugger, and according to many of today's elderly who were alive back then he was a Nazi sympathizer.

                                                                      It was a little more complicated than that, he saw godless communism as a greater evil and the Nazi's were fighting the heathens. They wanted them to defeat the soviets and then sign a peace treaty and stop the war etc.
                                                                      When it comes down to it though, is there a really big difference between looking the other way while 6 million people from another religion get slaughtered and killing millions of your own followers die with AIDS because you banned condoms?

                                                                                  correct of course, but to many the thing that stood out about him was that the side he backed was Hitler's. He also apparently "looked the other way" while millions of Jews were gassed, but that was probably okay because at least they weren't catholics.

                                                                                  As to the AIDS in Africa issue and any other social issues like it, I can only imagine that it would be very difficult for even the pope to go against church doctrine, especially on matters of sex. I'm in no way making excuses, I'm merely speculating on what the mindset on it might have been. Also, I wouldn't go laying the entire blame for the AIDS epidemic in Africa at the feet of the Vatican, the people had something to do with it too. As in, like the rest of us they are free to use proper protection anyway. Doesn't the Red Cross make condoms available to anyone who wants them over there?

                                                                                      Except John Paul I died of a heart attack not assination and John Paul II was 58 not 61 when he became Pope. So the rest ofthese so called fact are dubious at best.
