I need some math help please

This is so embaressing, I really think I am missing a few brain cells. A year ago this would be no problem for me but now .........

If a dog runs 50 feet in 3.5 secs how many miles per hour does he run?

If a dog runs 50 feet in 4.5 secs how fast does he run?

And how do you calculate this?

Someone please help me fast so I can finish my kids school project and let this thread die to avoid further embaressment. Thanks

x=50/3.5 = number of feet the dog runs per second
y=number of feet in a mile (google.com)
x/y=number of miles the dog runs per second
(x/y)*60*60=number of miles per hour

on the second question, you can just answer the dog runs (50/4.5) feet per second (you didn't ask for specific units)

sumphatpimp 04-17-2005 10:12 AM

I am wrong

Nicky 04-17-2005 10:13 AM

answer on question 1 should be 9,74 right?

So the calculation for question one would be:
50 feet in 3.5 secondes = 50 / 3.5 = 14.28571429 feet per second
there are 3,600 second per hour so 14.28571429 X 3,600 = 51,428.57144
if 5,280 feet = 1 mile than 51,428.57144 = 51,428.57144 / 5280 = 9.74 miles per hour.

Naughty 04-17-2005 10:15 AM

oops nevermind

DateDoc 04-17-2005 10:20 AM

3.5/50 = 3600/X so 3.5X = 50*3600 so X = 51428.571

That gives feet per hour. Divide by 5280 and you get 9.74 mph

That dog is slow.

This is what I was looking for thanks. Can't believe I could not figure this out. I can do complex math in my head when it comes to site stats, but something this simple totally bogs me down.

So 50 feet in 3.5 secs is 9.74 mph
50 feet in 4.5 secs is 7.56 mph

Yeah they are slow but they are puppies, ones a Siberian Husky and the other is a Boxer. Thanks for the help guys

Well that was their speed on a course I built. They are much faster but to get 14 week puppies to run a course is not easy. LOL
