is the Canon XL2 a good camera for shooting porn for DVD's or is it overkill ?

No, It's not overkill for DVD's....But as already mentioned, it lacks a flip out screen which is a very handy feature.

Not sure how much the XL2's are going for these days but you may want to consider looking at Sony's new HD camera since you are focusing on the DVD market. :2 cents:
