Police say man, officers scuffled

Bath entrepreneur taken to hospital after incident

Beacon Journal staff report

BATH TWP. - A Bath Township man with prior run-ins with police is being investigated for a Wednesday incident that ended in a scuffle with officers and a trip to St. Thomas Hospital for evaluation.

Bath Township police officers responded to the Granger Road home of Ryan D. Johnson after being told that the man was breaking out the windows of his residence, according to a police report.

Police were also told, according to the report, that Johnson turned on a water faucet in a second-floor bathroom and left it running, causing it to overflow and seep through the kitchen ceiling.

Police say Johnson threatened to jump off the roof of the home at one point and also fought with officers. He was taken to St. Thomas Hospital by emergency medical technicians after the incident.

St. Thomas had no listing for Johnson on Thursday. The Bath Township Police Department declined to comment on the status of their investigation, including whether Johnson faces any charges.

Wednesday wasn't the first time Johnson, a local Internet entrepreneur, came in contact with police officers.

He was arrested April 19 of last year on a charge of obstructing official business after a Fairlawn police officer reported that Johnson refused a request to produce a driver's license and remain in his vehicle while being cited for a fire lane violation at Summit Mall.

Bath Township police also responded to Johnson's home in mid-May after an SUV was smashed and another luxury vehicle wound up in a creek.

A Volkswagen Touareg was severely damaged from smashing through a security gate and then smashed with golf clubs and boulders. A Mercedes SL500 was parked in Yellow Creek, under the driveway bridge leading to Johnson's mansion.

The two vehicles were worth more than $100,000, police said.

Johnson moved into the 4,200-square-foot house when he was 20, reportedly paying more than $900,000, in the fall of 2003. The home had been advertised on Akron-area billboards aimed at attracting basketball star LeBron James and professional golfer Ben Curtis.

Crazy how things turn out. I remember when he got his first BMW. Now, he's smashing golf clubs in Volkswagens.
