This is such a funny little industry

There's the big players, the middle ground... the massive lower base.
There's so many people swindling others and people being swindled.
People refuse to believe some of the obvious because it's obvious and believe what they're fed to believe like sheep.
There are some people who walk in and make it work and leave with millions and some who've been here since the start and just barely pay their bills.
There's those who work from home, on their own.... doing their own thing. There are those who punch in at an office and sit in their cubicle.
There are the professional and the unprofessional.
There are those who are innovative and still come up with new stuff and there are those who can't figure out the stuff from 10 years ago while saying "there's nothing left that can be new, just different ways of doing the same old stuff."
There are success stories, tragic stories, euphoric stories, sober stories.... people who share, people who refuse to let anyone else know and people who just tell some and not everyone.
There are debates, arguments, fights and threats all the time. There are conversations, agreements, partnerships and mergers as well.

It's a funny little industry.

It has all the makings of every other industry. We're just a bit of a closer group than most others and get to experience it all a little more often and a little closer.

:thumbsup

Compare us to the oil industry, or the VISA industry (Yes, I consider Visa it's own industry considering it does TRILLIONS a year in revenue) we're tiny little drops in a huge ocean.

Porn is a little industry, compare it's world wide figures with other industries and it probably rates along side wedding photography.

This section of the porn industry is only part of it and I doubt if it has over taken the spend in the video section yet. Will do in the future but not today.

I think what NichePay - StuartD is reffering to is a lot of the people in the industry.

Wedding photography brings in $10 billion dollars a year? I'm in the wrong business..

Considering there are probably more employees at companies such as Sony, Nike, Duracell, Coke-a-Cola and such places than there in our entire online industry.... we are pretty small.
Ok, slight exhageration... but not by much.

In the grand scheme of industries world wide, ours is very young and has very few people in it. The largest companies in online porn have what? 100 employees? 200?

Online porn definitely does not bring in $10billion, all of porn combined maybe... but I'm not talking about that. Besides, online porn could bring in more money than any other industry and we'd still be pretty small in comparison.

There ya go, $2.5 bil I can believe. Respectable but no where near a "large" industry.

Jace 04-15-2005 05:54 AM

it still amazes me all these sites out there that have hundreds of hours of awesome content, and haven't even considered throwing their hat into the dvd/video market...it seems like a common sense business decision

Sexy Rex 04-15-2005 05:59 AM

Couldnt agree more, thxs for the neat post.

This industry reminds me of the video game industry a bunch of year ago (I was in there when Atari ST and Amigas were around). At that time, you could know a good portion of the players and feel 'close' to the others. Then owners and people really doing things stop going to trade shows, sending marketing guys instead, larger companies bought other smaller ones (or made sure to put them out of biz), big players from others industry came with lots of $$$ and it was the end of an era, begining of something else. There was a time when a video game could be done in a month or so, by a small group of talented people. Now it's more about years, hundereds of people and dozens of millions dollars. Reminds you of something?

I wonder what will happen for this industry, if it will follow the same path.

EddiePulp 04-15-2005 06:01 AM

funny bout that.. it sounds just like the game of LIFE!

gonna bump you, yea... this industry is kinda fucked up. do a thread search of my posts over the last mth and you'll see that i started 2 threads similar to yours. some people just don't give a fuck, all they care about is the $$ and they'll try to do whatever they can to get it

OG LennyT 04-15-2005 06:28 AM

great poetic post! (very honest look at things too)

ADL Colin 04-15-2005 06:31 AM

Yup. A microcosm.
