I Need HELP - FTP problem - slow uploads
I need your help, please. the problem is this: whenever i am uploading pics, either for avs sites or tgp, it seems to take a shit of time. it also takes sometimes very long to get into the directories.
what could be the problem? i have folders with 300+ subfolders in there and with 1000+ files (imgs and mirrors). could this affect the speed? i am hosted at candid on a dedicated, i dont have heavy traffic, 50k maybe, on this machine. for uploading i am using Windows Commander, but tried that coffe-something and some other which did suck. has anyone experienced the same problem? should i avoid too many subfolder in a folder? what amount of files is recommended in a folder? thanks a lot! and, no, i am probably not spamminge http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/wink.gif |
try using flash-fxp and enabling caching the dir listings. Yes the number of files is causing the slow down since the ftp program lists the files in a dir after almost every action

thanks m0rph3us, i will check out that ftp, too http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/wink.gif
so i guess, 1000+ isn't too good, is it? |

Have you tried uploading your files from somewhere else? Maybe a friend's computer? It is possible that the problem is with the connectivity to or the configurations on your server. ------------------ Create Your Own Hosting Plan! Below $0.80/GB Pay-As-You-Go Hosting FREE Trial! as RK said - the amount of files in a directory wonīt effect the upload speed or the time to switch into a directory for sure - if the server is not overloaded what i donīt expect with 50k hits, perhaps your isp has some problems. With that amount of files and directorys i would compress them and unpack them on server side - that way you can easily resume the file if you are on a slow connection.

thanks a lot

Er, the point about the 1,000+ files in a single directory, while uploading multiple files to this same directory is this:
Most FTP clients will request another dir listing after *every* upload. When you're uploading things like small pictures, the dir listing may indeed take longer than the actual upload. It could concievably take forever if you had a large enough list of files to upload. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif So yes, of course it does not control throughput whatsover, but it may very well indeed effect "total upload time" or whatever you deem fit to call it. -Phil |
thanks again http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/wink.gif (i say thank you to get listed at the top again and again as i really want to hear as many opinions as possible)
*more info*: i use a cable modem down-/upstream 512kb/s / 128kb/s hosted dedicated at candidhosting, check the ad at GFY. uploads to some of my other servers work fine eg PROTGP. but i dont have many files in the folder overthere. reading into the directories takes a a lot of time, sometimes (mostly, actually). uploading the files themselves is sometimes fast, sometimes slow, when the upload is done, it sometimes takes forever to "read into the directory" (whatever it is translated into english, my ftp is in german..) thanks a lot guys, i am still testing ftps and i just downloaded flash fxp, as i was advised.... http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/wink.gif btw, my niche is "amateur" GFY http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/wink.gif |
Flash fxp is not bad so far.
