Seems to be alot of DJs and Rappers now in the biz.....

We need to have some competitions. A little competition never killed anyone.

It would have to be something that is actually a competition and not a popularity contest.

Based on:

1) Overall Skills
2) Technical Merit
3) Creativity
4) Execution

I'm going to the drawing board. I got an idea. STAY TUNED.

Here are the ones i know off the top of my head.

ytcracker
jace xxx
nader
jester
evan

Theres at least 10 more that i saw posting that they were DJs and rappers throughout the last year at least.

List your skills and links to your materials here if you got em.

I was a house/trance Dj for over 10 years. I started off at rave party afterhours in Chicago in 94... then I did some house/frat parties in college and a monthly residence at a small club in Chicago. I gave it up when I realized that nobody cares wht the DJ spins anymore... its not like back in the rave days where you could bring the crowd to its knees with a bomb track. Living in AZ doesn't help either. Guess I just have a negative attitude about spinning. :(

basically ignorance is my weapon as a dj. you can do the smallest easiest things and get cheers and people go wild. half the people i give my cds too dont even know which song is which.

as long as they like it :1orglaugh

i've seen his stuff. he is a big room club dj. nader is a cool cat.

i'm talking about turntablism and possibly producing some segments for judging.

i convinced that any monkey can learn how to beatmatch and switch over records, but it takes creativity and lots of experience to really fuck it up and mash a crowd.

this is in no way reflective of nader or myself, i am a big room club dj too.

i am planning some stuff to keep this all from getting boring for all of us that are into turntables.

xNetworx 04-13-2005 03:52 PM

Lets face it guys... being a DJ isn't as cool now that they have CD mixers in almost every club.

r-c-e 04-13-2005 04:15 PM

I've been playing pubs and clubs spinning hiphop and funk for the last 3 years. Its a little different in underground hiphop scenes, because EVERYONE knows what track you're dropping.....and it better be fucking dope or you lose the crowd quickly.

i am a full time pimp, its a fulltime job pimpin hoes.

WTF? why arent you on the corner!? GET BACK TO WORK!

Jace 04-13-2005 04:20 PM

I am down for it. I am actually about to release my first full length turntablism cd....but god damn it is hard to fill up 60 minutes of it...i have over 100 records so far for the cd. One of my buddies who is Usher's producer is going to be working with me on it

I think we should do a contest...and I think each participant should submit a video, unedited, for their entry...this could be fun

I can be in your posse. All the rappers have like 40 guys on stage. I can be the token white guy holding the pimp crusted cup, doing the worm.

Interested?

yeah, i personally use at least 90% vinyl...but my own produced tracks I have to play on cd, cause I don't feel like plopping down $200 a pop to get a dub made

well, i was being respectful. whoever has the love for the decks is ok in my book. wanna be or not. before i was a dj that actually got work every week at good venues and for big name spots, i guess i was a wannabe too, so i may be meeting the next big person. wouldn't make sense for me to be rude to anyone who might work with me someday.

XPays 04-13-2005 05:53 PM

advice for wannabe's - keep your day job.

1990 -- started playing
1991 -- started playing professionally in S.f. and Berkeley party and rave scene
1991 and a half -- worked and partied all night, slept all day and missed all of my classes at berkeley. fell into a fast crowd.
1991 and a half through about 1995 -- played less frequently but at bigger venues and events
1995 -- became a purist and vowed to never accept payment for my musical services again
Yesterday -- turned down an invite to play a 2 hr set at a movie release party for Snoop at the Tribeca Film Festival even though I am already headed to nyc that same weekend.

dj'ng and playing all instruments for that matter for the average person is a great hobby and outlet that can get corrupted if you cross a certain line which is different for everybody. the release and freedom of expression are the benefits of being a purist imho & ego's do not fit in to the mix.

For every lantern and hookid there are a lot of washed failures who's lives are spent living a fantasy that turns into a nightmare with self-realization.

we are all wanna-be's in some form or fashion

i may get booked a lot and have cd's, but i wanna be able to play more places around the world, and not just the USA...so I "wanna be" more global with my sound

very well said man...egos will get you no where FAST......

DJing is my career, adult is just a money maker while I wait for that to happen...I plan on being a dj until I loose function of my arms and I can't use turntables anymore..djing is my passion more than anything ever has been in my life

Just let me know the time and place. All I require is the pimp cup (filled with apple juice), some shell toes, a kangol, aviator's, an adidas sweatsuit, and some cheesey gold chains. Meet the demands and I'm in!

no offense meant- being a dj and being a webmaster are both full-time ventures imho. being a webmaster is nice for family and a home-life that is truly rich. being a hot dj is demanding and unconventional in major ways of course- still a worthy pursuit of course as it is to follow any dream. most people are too scared to risk it so hat's off.

cool, i will get you a few out next week when I send the next shipment out

seeric 04-13-2005 06:05 PM

evan speaks it.

djing for me is about a feeling that i get better than any drug you could ever take. and that feeling is also way more addictive than any drug too.

this si the 5 second version: for more info see www.airek.com

1989- started djing. sucked ass really bad. still had the love.
1997- started playing professionally in clubs. still not the best dj around.
1999- resident dj for the biggest party club in san diego. bustydjs.com born along with busty-amateurs party crew and dj team comprosed of many of san diego's most popular djs.
2000- toured brazil for one year. 30 cities. too many gigs to remember. played many large parties in excess of 5000 people.
2001- returned to u.s.a. re-entered adult and became resident dj at san diego nightclubs 4 nights a week and traveled extensively in and out of the u.s. playing raves and parties. almost went down the wrong road.
2003- re-entered adult and started back up into the mix.
2005- presently still rocking it at two hotspots in california. running a private sector high end dj company and doing marketing for a great herbal company www.herbalrevenue.com .

I made a deal with my wife about 6 months ago...I was going to pursue my musical career if she could handle a slight decrease in my income...she was fine with it as long as I was pursuing my dream

i have no dreams of becoming the nest superstar dj...never have...in fact it is one thing I don't think i would like...I can not in good conscience accept the kind of money that some of these guys do for doing what they do...I see dj's like sasha and oakenfold make $10-15k a gig and it makes me sick...like $5k wasn't good enough??!?!!

I just want the chance to spread my passion and love of the music I play and make

I havent touched a table in 12 years plus. Im dear friends with BadBoyBill, we all went to high school together. Played alot of small time gigs with bill and julian perez in the late 80's at old abandoned train stations and VFW's. Times have changed dramatically, im an old school house guy through and through and would never make it today. I hate the new club music. He will be back to vision on the 30th this month, will be a good time for sure. :thumbsup

oakenfold busts into the mix tape underground market next week just prior to his upcoming tour.

the money is all being made in the underground and anyone wanting to break off a cut, better have some serious protection and a bullet-proof vest.

the appearance fees of house and trance style dj's and even hip-hop dj's are nothing compared to the cash whookid is clocking and they are some serious thugs who are not to be messed with running the show.

it is a messy equation and hip-hop is the only genre making money.

depending on who the dj is, i like it...there is a lot of shit out there lately though....i love some of the parts on bad boy bills cd's, but overall I am never real impressed with him..i saw him twice live and it was terrible

I am EXTREMELY impressed with what he has done with himself though, he built a mini-empire, and all by himself...what he has done with himself and his companies is amazing, and I will respect and support him forever for that reason

i don't really agree with that totally, i have very good friends that play and produce house and trance that are raking in some serious cash...and while when you say making money you are thinking high 7 figures and up, when I think making money I am talking low 6 figures and up....there are a lot of domestic based djs that play out 4-5 nights a week across the country and rake in a high 6 figure income just from travelling and djing...that doesn't count in their production companies and other ventures

one of our clients in mainstream just closed a blanket license deal with universal and has had several threats on his life from the people who pre-release tracks while the same labels turn a blind eye.

the numbers are 7 fig's monthly from underground nationwide distribution and it is ALL CASH.

What is the big fascination with oakenfold? not impressed at all. i have seen him 3 or 4 times live, twice he played dat tapes and pretended to dj. weak. i would never book him. darren was talking about getting him for January in vegas. i told him to get tiesto. i am not sure the adult community will even like any of them. i have had to gravely hack and slash my underground style to rock an adult crowd. i had to make my shit so commercial just to be accepted by adult.
