computer problem: it restarts by itself and ruins my unsaved work

my piece of shit computer restart by itself. i mean it suddenly goes blank, and starts booting up again. or sometimes it just freezes.
sometimes it does it every couple minutes, sometimes it does it after a couple hours.
i use win2k and never had problems before.
dont tell me to format c: because i did it already.

can it be a hardware problem? or bios problem? maybe the power source inside the case has a problem?

Prolly hardware. We had a similar problem on my wife's machine (win2K as well). Ultimately her primary hard drive went belly up. Switched to her secondary and haven't had any problems since.

now it kept on freezing while booting.. i had to restart 5 times. and once a page saying "stop error page" or something like that showed up. it was a blue screen.
plz someone help.

Lane 01-05-2002 01:35 PM

oh ok
the blue scree said it could be either hardware or bios problem.

my cpu is overclocked, could that be the problem? it's been running for over a year tho

TheDr 01-05-2002 01:38 PM

Are you running MBM, and if so have your temps and voltages remained the same ?

Yes, that is very likely to be the problem. CPU become demaged over time due to overcloaking.

Those freezes are very often caused by problems with the CPU or motherboard.

most of the time its not freezing. sometimes it is. but usually the screen goes blank, and it restarts just like someone pulled out the electric plug and put it back very quickly.

huh?
it never happened in the middle of a game. and there is also no problems about the video modes.

I just had a similiar problem, turned out to be a bad stick of RAM.

Lane 01-05-2002 02:02 PM

oh god
am i supposed to suspect every single piece of hardware on my system?

Dopy 01-05-2002 02:15 PM

1st job - scandisk.

TheDr 01-05-2002 02:17 PM

Don't know about the others, but we got every symptom you've described, including the power down and restart.

spacedog 01-05-2002 02:18 PM

Your Pc is having difficulty locating certain files it needs to operate..
Scandisk
Defrag disk..
This should help..
If any files are missing, then scan disk will tell you..
Defrag will put all the files & info in order that your machine is supposed to be configured at..

You can disable the auto reboot by right clicking my properties then go to /advanced/startup and recorvery and then disable auto reboot. This is for win2k only

ok now i reduced the cpu speed back to its original. it was a celeron 566mhz (8 x 66) running at 850mhz (8.5 x 100). now i took it back to 566mhz and didnt restart yet. lets see if its gonna be stable like this.

RedShoe 01-05-2002 03:41 PM

Well...

Did that work?

Lane 01-05-2002 04:07 PM

yeah it didnt do it again. maybe the cpu doesnt handle the overclock anymore.

Lane 01-05-2002 04:08 PM

its been running at this speed for more than a year. weird that it suddenly became so unstable.
anyways its been an hour that it didnt crash, thats good. but it sucks to go from 850mhz back to 566mhz.

danevans 01-05-2002 05:29 PM

Hey Lane, you might as well check the cpu cooler. I had the same problem on my old computer when I installed additional ram modules.. It finally turned out that I had accidentaly plugged the cooler off of the motherboard, so after a min or two, it would restart...
So check the cables, or try replacing the cooler with a new, better one.. And restore the old cpu settings.

If you're ok @ 66MHz then it's not your CPU, your 100MHz clock is smoked.
Get another 100MHz clock soldered in and you'll be fine.
