Please Help, compu probs (registry)

Hi,

I just started up the computer (not this one, but one with all internet files on it), but when it started it gave me a registry error. I had to restart so Windows could automatically fix that. Now it seems I have a lot of olfiles running (old pic on desktop), I had to reinstall the network drivers and then Windows doesn't work anymore. When I started it up, I get the "this program has performed an illegal operation" -> Close message. I have tried to restart, safe mode, scandisk at startup, but I never get to see my icons, always the damn error before the system starts.

I need my files.

Also, how do I rerun windows setup when I never get access to explorer (the main explorer, which runs all the files and such).

Can I run that from the C;\ prompt? I know how to use software, but this I am no good at.

Please help!

Thanks.

You might try using the startup disk and typing: scanreg /restore .. I've had to fall back on this at times.

if your running win98
you can boot to dos and try re-installing windows..

To access your CD drive you un-commit out

rem - By Windows Setup - C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /M:10

what you want is

C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /M:10

Then reboot to dos and install windows from DOS

put your windows cd in, find what drive letter it is and from C:
type in d http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/frown.gifor what ever drive it is) install

After numerous frustrating hours, this seems a reasonable solution. Where do I type this, and if it doesn't work after I did that, is there any way of trying to install windows again from C: without losing my programs on the PC?

I have some programs on there I cannot easily get again, otherwise I would have format C already.

Windows does sucks
but you can connect the HD from the not working pc to the working 1
and move all your files...
then reinstall windows...

Trying it right now... looks like a very handy function. Especially since you can choose between like 4 old .cab files, so I chose one from 2 days ago...
the old image is there, let me logon...

Gotta love it.. windows sucks or not... this option RULES!!

I got it all back http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/biggrin.gif

Now fire up the burner, get some empty CD's from the cabinet and burn more backups...
