i'm becoming more and more intrested in learning to fly a plane


anyone here FAA certified and have any advice to get started ?

I flew many years ago.....

Look up "flying lessons" in the phone book and make a few calls. They'll point you in the right direction. Some places offer in-class ground school but I did mine at home....at my own pace. This is the cheaper way to do it but it takes a little longer as well. It's very fun learning to fly :thumbsup

i've been looking at schools, they cost between 4-6k

having a pilot's license sounds like much fun, i'm facinated by flight

It is heaps of fun, however its also expensive as you'll need to fly every 3 months to keep your PPL (assuming thats what u want)

Start with a "Discovery Flight". They're usually only 25 bucks and are sponsored by Cessna.

I fly, by the way. I love it. I should do it more often.

Used to have one but i let it expire.

I couldnt be bothered with it after i got it and didnt keep my airtime up to what i was supposed to LOL

Whilst its certainly a great thing to have whilst aiming for it, once you get it, it gets boring very quickly, there are only so many times you can fly over the same area of land before anything gets boring ;)

Im thinking of going for my helicopter license in a few months time as 'something' new but again, ill probably let that expire after i have gotten it too :)

how many hours do you have to fly to "keep up" your hours ?

Took all the courses when i was 16, got my license, never finished my solo hours.

I learned a lot about clouds though, lol.

When i had mine it was like 15-20 hours a month from what i recall, the more you do though the better chance you have at movin up the ranks as it were.

For example, my father flys something like 50 hours a week and has his instructors license, depending on the type of license you have that determines how many hours airtime you need each month.

Was that just for the lessons or everything? Landing, fuelling, aircraft rental etc etc?

I think when i did mine the whole thing ended up costing close to 10k including all the landing fees etc.

have about 2000 hrs TT, and have been an airplane owner since 1986.


1. if you are in USA take introductory flight at any FBO, about 50 bucks.

2. see if it is interesting to you.

3. then find a good CFI that you can get along with---lots of different teaching styles from CFIs, some are good, some are not worth a shit---flying a plane is part science part art, and there's a bunch of different "styles" of getting those greaser landings.

4. early on buy your own airplane and learn to fly it while training---this will save you rental money, and as soon as you solo you can build time fast.

5. being a real pilot requires a committment to the lifestyle---and it costs big loot to fly or own an airplane. you must fly often to stay sharp.

6. make sure you can pass at least a third class medical.

7. average time to become a PP is usa is about 60-65 hours now, and maybe 7-10k in training in something like a cessna 172.

8. once you get a couple hundred hours take aerobatics training, it will take your fear of flying away.

9. FAA just created new "sport pilot" category making getting into flying less costly---but i don't advise this if you want to be a real pilot (traveling, IFR, etc.)

lil brother is in school to become a pilot, already has his private liceanse, and instrument, lil fucker flys over and drops water baloons out of his cessna!

I got mine in only 2 weeks....I did it in Florida......I didnt learn how to land tho.

my buddy got his a while back and now he gives lessons.... he's down here though, let me know when you're in the area, i'll hook you up with a flight :thumbsup

I owned 3 planes but sold them when I bought my house in Vegas. Havent flown since, cant say that I miss it or the big holes that owning 3 planes put in my wallet.

My friends a pilot, he flys us everywhere. He flys king airs now.

If you don't have the time, or money, it's definitely not something you should pursue. As MrPheer and others have pointed out, it burns a hole in your pocket.

We get a thick marine layer here in the valley, and I love going out IFR while everyone else is grounded:
