Found CP? Read this!

#1) We don't want to see it. So why post the url?

#2) There are many places to report it. If you are worried about being tied back to it somehow use nonymouse.com to surf the reporting sites then. missingkids.com and asacp.com and your local RCMP, Police, FBI etc are the places you need to report this. Let them do their job.

#3) Don't be a fucking hero. If you come across it, close it off immediately and stop investigating. I know you want to get to the bottom of it but do you realize that police read logs when they investigate this shit and see your IP sitting there with repeated attempts?

#4) Again, don't be a fucking hero. Having the host and/or registrar shut it down may be doing more harm than good. More times than you know, these are police run without the companies knowing about it. Also, how can they investigate something properly if you have it shut down?

#5) Yes, just by viewing it, even if on accident and especially if you are playing "mr investigator" you can be convicted of possession. I had a cop once tell me that even though I reported the material to him that I could be charged if they ever did a deep scan on my drive and found offending images.

Stop being a hero. Use the proper avenues and let the police do their job. Sometimes by being a hero you do more harm than good and can ruin your own life. What if they see your ip hitting it repeatedly, come and confiscate your gear, then you're left with nothing to do your work on? All work files lost, computer gone almost indefinitely... then hauled off to jail for possession even though you were only investigating and deleted the file. The files are still there, just not indexed. Deleting just removes the index in the file allocation table.

Just close it off, report it anonymously, clear and zero fill your cache to DOJ specs and continue about your day.

That's very informative. However, #5 is highly unlikely to happen. They look for patterns in your behavior and if you don't have CP all over you PC it's not worth their time.

You're probably right, but is it worth the chance? People here have a business to run, the slight chance that they may be get raided over it is not worth it. Some people get so wrapped up in it that they become not just the victim and hero, but end up being involved too deep.

Making sure the masses get it through their thick skulls is sometimes necesary.

well, protecting children is far more important than being afraid of getting raided. And the likelihood of the authorities getting a warrant to search your PC, because you clicked on a link and reported it, is very slim. It's sad that fear should dictate weather or not it's worth our time to protect children and convict perverts.

You're right. but in this day and age some cops are so gung-ho to make a bust they'll stop at nothing.

I'm pretty sure a guy in Perth Australia was convicted of possessing CP even though he claims it was not intended and it was only on his computer for minutes. It was a single image.

This was at least a few years ago, so the police force may be a little more realistic these days... especially when spam has gone from being 10% of your mail to 90% of it
