I'm Seriously Considering Getting A Personal Assistant!

There are so many "small" things that continue to pop into my life and a regular basis and it takes away from my main focus: making money! I always thought personal assistants were for pompous assholes but now that I'm busy, I'm thinking totally different!

I need someone to drop off and pick up my dry cleaning, to get my car maintenanced, and just run mundane errands that I don't have the time to do myself. Hell, monitoring my ICQ and AIM would be a full time job for any assistant!

I have never inquired about a personal assistant and wouldn't know the first thing about how to find one. Anyone in the know? Maybe a staffing agency or maybe even an interm? :helpme

Put an ad in a paper. You can find one for like 11-15/hr + her/his expenses. Great for college students so try that

CynthiaB 04-07-2005 07:03 PM

Hey, you have to look at what your time is worth. I never thought I made enough money to hire a house cleaning service, but when I looked at how much time I was spending doing the work and buying the supplies, it was worth it.

Depending where you live, try advertising on Craigslist.org - lots of great people there in lots of cities and it's cheap.

I have a person who helps me 1-1.5 days a week on average. When you're single, it really takes a load off when you don't have to worry about domestic duties.

That might even work. A part-time assistant. I really don't need nor want someone on my ass every day. 2 days out of the week should be well enough to get done with all of the choirs that I don't have time to do myself.

Cynthia, that is soooo true! I don't know what I would do without my maid! She has made my life A LOT easier! Nothing beats coming home to a clean house every single day and you're laundry is done and hanging for you. It's like having your mother live with you only now she barely speaks English, doesn't have a greencard, and steals from you. It's a sacrafice I'm willing to make. She can grab a chotcki every now and then if that keeps her around. :thumbsup

That may be a bad idea! If they are close and you piss your wife off will you now have a pissed off employee? On the other hand if all is always well and such go for it.

jonesy 04-07-2005 07:31 PM

yo high heres the solution man

if your incorporated you can hit up any college in the area and get college interns to work for you

FOR FREE -
the time the student spends at your job goes towards credits ect

Look into to it its the way to go

fuck putting an ad in the paper - youll only attract assholes.

My wife and her sister and I work very well together :winkwink:

I found that by telling all the salespeople (except personal friends) to call me on Thursdays. I am able to keep the rest of the week free for a life of my own and get a lot more accomplished without interruptions.

bad move, imo.... if you get into a fight with your wife... and then leave to go somewhere with her sister and she doesn't want to get involved in your fight.. might also cause tension between them etc....

i dunno thats just my opinion... but then again i don't know you guys in real life

Went with the intern idea for designers and it was a total nightmare. I spent more time trying to micro-manage them than I did running my business. The one thing I found out is that a person only works as hard as how much you pay them. Interns are free so it's pretty much a non-brainer.

When did you try to call? If you just called then no one is going to answer because we close at 10. :)

Otherwise someone ALWAYS answers the phone. I don't believe in automated answering systems.

Maureenoz 04-07-2005 08:00 PM

The first person we hired was a personal assistant and it was the best move we ever made. Our business really grew when I had more time to spend working or bitching that he never helped with the chores.

Once you get the PA, work on a housekeeper.

I never called you but I referred some mainstream clients to you because I thought your printing prices were fair. I am out of brokering print jobs and just give referrals WITHOUT commission and posted feedback.

I am just a designer. However, on another thread I saw that you were doing single prints at a great price, and if I didn't piss you off, I have a personal order for you :)

xNetworx 04-07-2005 08:16 PM

Stop trying to sound important... :winkwink:

never have an intern designer or anything similar, thats a fuckin no brainer and i agree with you on the rest - but with intern assistants running erands and shit like that you wont have any problems especially with a girl.

i and a few other people i know have had luck just screen the fuck out of em thats all..

Personal assistants are awesome. Put an ad in the paper. Hire a somewhat mature woman whose children are grown and out of the house....who doesn't have emotional baggage..and knows how to cook, dial a phone, drive a car and pretty much do everything.

Caroline from 'The Apprentice' would do very nicely.

Rob 04-08-2005 06:07 AM

The search is on. I am going to do some research today and get myself a part-timer. :thumbsup
