AOL Launches Internet Phone Service
 

When you sit back and think about it, the Internet has had a huge impact on society in general. Soon we'll be using the Internet for everything, from turning on our AC in the house from the car to our fridge ordering food for us directly from the store.

It was years ago when Internet telephone service came out - I remember Tanker having it. We are only a few steps away from the video phone the Jetsons used to have.

How will AOL moving into this market effect telephone service in general, and how else will the internet touch our lives?

It will have a very small impact. Most people have cell phones now. I know many that don't even own a house phone anymore.

I no longer have a house phone myself. My local phone company made multiple changes to my service (one of the changes included dropping my message center). I decided to call them and put off calling them as well as paying them, and they disconnected my phone and wanted me to me pay a reconnect fee. By then I had discovered that we have two cell phones and that we didn't have a need for a home phone.

No more telemarketing calls!

VoIP might work... they'd be competing with vonage and whatever. AOL is really grasping at needles in hay stacks now. They are going in all different directions, trying to stay in the game. Their future was very poorly planned.
