What's the deal with 1 letter .com domains? a.com b.com ... weird
 

I tried a.com through g.com and it doesn't seem like they're live.. but z.com worked ... WTF?

I know x.com has been going to paypal for a long time, upwards of a year or so.

For a short period of time they were available to register.

Those who got in on it can renew. Since, they have all dropped and been held by IANA. Just like example.com. The working .coms: x.com, q.com, z.com.

There is also i.net and x.org. May be one or two more net/orgs.

most of the single letter domains are owned by Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). They are reserved as root name servers for the future.
