So I'm in need of making *consistent* money, Please read.

I was hoping I'd never have to make a thread like this.. but my mainstream attempts to make $ have not proven successful yet - unfortunately these things have taken a lot longer to workout than I initially anticipated, especially when combined with a run of bad luck. Most of you know me as a freelance designer which is what I did more so than what i do now over a year ago, but because the income was so inconsistent, I shifted that aside and built a couple health/fitness related sites in hopes of consistency - this has not materialized yet.

My situation is this: Need to have enough $ to move out w/ the gf by the time summer is over at the latest, and I've decided $3k a month (consistently of course) would allow me to do this.

I really want to "diversify" my income. Currently I have a bit coming from my mainstream sites (no where near enough), I also do some freelance design work (no where near full-time), and I think adding a third source would be in my best interest. I somewhat know the basics of adult promotion but I am by no means extensively experienced.

So I was wondering if there might be an already established adult webmaster who could "show me the ropes" in exchange for barter work (to see what I can do check out www.garysimon.net - design, etc, most of everything). But this is really important to me, I don't want to rely on my resume site in the near future to help me get a "normal" job. I also thought of just trying to learn on my own, but since I'm quite pressed for time (the matter of 5 / 6 months, I don't want to take a risk with the unfortunate process of extensive trial and error because believe me, I've been there - this is too important for me to be fucking around)

I'm also completely open to the idea of working full-time for anyone who can contract at least a 6-12 month design/dev job.

I look back on all I've done and how long I've been on the net and really this is a depressing situation, it's more than pathetic, I know. But I learned first hand that making a leap from "designer / developer" to webmaster(mainstream) is not an easy one, so I have to bite the dust and seek out any and all oppurtunity to help me out in this stressful situation of a ticking clock. ;)

If you're interested in helping me out in exchange for work or whatever, let me know, I have several examples of adult work I've done too.

And those who wish to flame, I accept it as I have brought this situation upon myself. ;) I guess you could say I'm the ultimate example of those who wonder why talented designers/developers don't work for themselves.

Thanks! :helpme

how much does your mainstream online personal training site bring in per month net profits vs. adv expenditures

Sly 04-05-2005 09:35 PM

If you are willing to bust your ass and do what you're supposed to do, I'll show you some ropes in exchange for favors and cash. I could use your talent. You'll make your money.

Contact me tomorrow if interested.

your mainstream work looks top notch..

in adult.. its about converting.. If you can do that.. work for yourself.. Easiest job in the world...

warlock5 04-05-2005 09:43 PM

Have you considered using a sales letter to promote your personal training site? I wouldn't give up on that idea yet. I don't really know what you've done with it so far, or any details for that matter.. but how is the conversion rate, what kind of traffic are you getting, etc.. Is one of these things causing you not to make the money you want to?

CDSmith 04-05-2005 09:43 PM

Takes a big man to admit he needs help, especially if you've been in the biz for a few years and have even the slightest reputation going as someone who is successful.

I would take Sly up on his offer for starters.

well, I never had much $ to advertise it, I've only done advertising through adwords PPC. The signup ratio was around 1:170 and each of those signups cost me roughly the same amount as the membership costs ($14.95). Avg retention rate is around 2-3 months I believe. The site needs updates and it will be able to hold on avg at least 3-4 months, but that's for the future. One of the main problems I ran into was the fact that there didn't seem to be much demand / searches for the keywords in adwords (which soul rebel helped me realize).

You might consider advertising on weight loss and health sites. Lower conversions rates but more traffic.

galleryseek, get in touch with this guy. he has proven to be invaluable many times over. From simple things to larger scale things. If it weren't for sly I would still be mopping floors for a living.

When I first read your post I was like here we go... Another idiot claiming to be a designer crying about cash. Then something happened. I clicked your link. Damn dude... You got skill. You need to use it. Take your skills come up with a bunch of example work for adult stuff, like banners, fpas, sites... And shop your services around. You can make green if you got talent. And you got talent.

You could try contacting a content company and working out an arrangement on turnkeys to get you going... You could also get your portfolio together and throw a contest of some sorts whoring yourself out for a day or so just to get exposure...

We all have rough spots in this biz. Trust me on that. One thing my wife has always told me... She never has to worry about our $$$. She knows I will always figure out a way to make more of it when all hell breaks lose. You can too. Take a step back and brainstorm some ways to shop your skills out.

Yeah, you took a big risk by posting this, as this board is crawling with a ton of posturing assholes who want nothing more than to prove to strangers that they are somehow better than them. I think it takes a big man to show his weaknesses in an environment like this one. Much respect to you and I hope things work out in your favor.

SmokeyTheBear 04-05-2005 10:49 PM

The site looks tight and so does your work.

You obviously have some problems organizing your efforts , because i just cant see how you could have all those qualifications and not be making a safe amount of $$ ( in adult )

I have a great idea for a designer i was thinking about recently that might work out for you. Ill let you know

MetaformX 04-05-2005 10:53 PM

If anything, I would imagine you could get a job with a big design company like Webinc or some of the others out there. Or see if a program is looking for a designer. It's all about making contacts. Just start contacting people and you will see the doors open up.

galleryseek 04-05-2005 11:06 PM

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Ahh, I don't put any weight on that stuff. A person can't be summed up by the amount of money they make, those who do aren't worth knowing in the first place.

Chris 04-05-2005 11:15 PM

hmm nopt seeing much adult you have done
you have amazing mainstream skills
im sure you can find a large corp to get a design from you ?
those guys got money :D

flashfreak 04-05-2005 11:50 PM

Good luck Gary :thumbsup

Design is undervalued at the moment. Don't sell yourself short or let people devalue your work.

Make some flyers and cards and put them everywhere, have a scare angle so like it breaks the entropy of people's sedentary lifestyle.

But have a beginner section on your site, [think obese helpless & no idea about any of your shit] start from ground zero with these people.

Haven't looked at your site since the launch but at that time it was geared to a more advanced audience who wouldn't need it.

woj 04-06-2005 12:13 AM

nice site... good luck...

Steen2 04-06-2005 12:26 AM

Very nice design.

If I had long term need (and $) I would definitely consider hiring.
