BUSINESS THREAD: Indian traffic and it's potential. What's your opinion on it?

Indian traffic, what's your take on it? Do you think it will be valuable?

I think it will. Here's why:

First of all, the amount of English speaking Indians. Between 50 and 250 million people speak English in India, making it the second language. And even though 25% of India's population still lives under the poverty line, there is a promising growth of the IT industry and loads of upcoming rich people. Indias economy is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. More and more households are getting Internet and experiencing surfing websites for the very first time.

Having this said, I think with the release of .in domain names back in February, Indians will focus on the Internet and their own extension more and more over the upcoming years. Will it be a smart thing to invest now? I think so. I'm not saying no Indian has ever been on the Internet before the launch of .in but there are most certainly more money making possibilities thanks to .in. For example, it will be easier to handle Indian traffic. Up till now, maybe your .com TGP had 2% Indian traffic. Maybe your .in TGP has 95% Indian traffic in 2 years. Marketing products will be alot easier this way.

As for myself, I am developing several projects concerning .in domains. I'm planning on releasing them one by one over the upcoming months. In my opinion, any .in that you even slightly develop now, will be worth at least twice it's value over 5 years. How can you go wrong with a few 10 dollar domains and some hours of labour.

So what's your opinion on .in domains and Indian traffic. Will it be worth your time? Please discuss.

I wouldnt be sure about theit economical potential...also a conservative culture...lets say its a bet..

samsam 04-04-2005 03:48 PM

I think you mentioned most of the major points. It will take at least 2 - 3 years for things to hot up but they will do so because of the way in which internet is taking off over there.

Anyone can go to india and not have a problem with language. Theres always someone who speaks english - funny but true. India is streets ahead of china in that respect IMO. As the india economy heats up, the traffic itself will become worth more.

As a matter of fact i found indian traffic to convert much better than chinese or other asian traffic, not sure why.

Conservative culture, but do you know that has much of an impact on the way people will spend money on the Internet? And I'm not talking about offering your beastialitysex paysites to them (hypothetically speaking), but in general.

For optin email groups, Indian traffic is great. Make sure your sponsor accepts Indian traffic though.

BiggleJones 04-04-2005 04:00 PM

I run an indian site (see sig) and know the great potential of having indian content shown to westerners....but I wonder what kind of filters the indian governement will use to block veiwing of adult websites in their own country. Only fairly recently were women allowed to show their bras in Bollywood films. I think that it be long time before Indian traffic shows much promise. :2 cents:

IMO a conservative culture is great for porn sales online. Sexually repressed people are great for porn sales, especially in an somewhat anonymous venue like the internet.

I've read before that the #1 searched for topic in Arab countries is porn

TheSenator 04-04-2005 04:02 PM

Indians like hardcore fetishes like peeing, cages and some other wierd shit.

Think of it the other way. I mean there is no way they can block out all these sites. Wouldn't there be a huge demand for Indian titties on the Internet. People secretly watching them behind their computers at night?

By the way, do you offer Indian gay content or do you know where I could buy some?

Sorry...only our one solo girl, Rakhee, for now.

That is true that they cannot block all the sites, but also $20/mo is still a pretty big amount of money to the average working Indian.

And like Asians and Latinos, I think that big-titty-blonde-haired-white-girls will sell best to Indian customers. The British and US seem to have the thing for Indian women.

KRL 04-04-2005 04:09 PM

India is a huge player in the movie making industry. I see opportunity for online films.

It seems reversing to good old AVS sites is the way to start then. Have them pay $5 for a few galleries with kickass content. Sell larger volumes and charge less by the number. Eventually, these $5 paying customers will be willing to spend more as soon as they get familiar with spending money on the Internet.

Online Bollywood movies.. I think that will have to wait a few years. But as soon as loads of people are on fast broadband.. why not. Bollywood is huge there.

Honestly no. I'm not Indian. But I know how trends work. You can generalise trends to a certain degree having a good amount of facts. I think you don't have to be a rocket scientist to realise that things like online dating will grow in India. Some rules apply anywhere in the world. Same goes for alot of other concepts.

Of course, selling porn might be a different thing. It's always very country specific. Working with local processors and preferred payments methods. I think these things will become more clear over the upcoming years.

Fake Nick 04-04-2005 04:50 PM

also ,I can imagine that Indian people would rather trust and buy from a site in India that is based in India than an english site based somewhere in the world

selling things to Indian people sounds great ,but there are many obstacles

Yup, my first attempt when the .in came out was to try and register Bollywood.in ;)

They have the second largest movie industry in the world, but you'll never guess who holds the 3rd place..............Nigeria, a country where there are NO cinemas (movies theatres) has the third largest movie industry in the world. There are 120 million people living there and they own 70 million VCRs or DVD players.

BlueQuartz 04-04-2005 05:29 PM

Actually that is wrong. According to something I read recently on the BBC website, Bollywood is actually the LARGEST film industry in the world.

Hollywood is the largest.

UK industry to boost Indian film
Culture secretary Tessa Jowell has struck a deal to begin negotiations for the UK and Bollywood film industries to share their resources.

The deal would enable filmmakers in India to invest in British talent and UK locations, while they could also be eligible for UK film tax incentives.

Ms Jowell met Indian Information and Broadcasting Minister Shri Jaipal Reddy in Delhi to discuss the terms.

The Indian film industry is the largest in the world.

The country has produced more than 67,000 films in over 30 different languages since 1931, when "talkies" were first introduced into its industry.

In 2004 there were 2.7 billion admissions to cinemas in India and £2bn was taken at the box office. There were 52 Hindi films released in the UK, taking £8.1m at the box office.

"Bollywood is the most impressive and spectacular film industry in the world," Jowell said.

"Like the UK film industry, it has a rich heritage of producing entertaining, challenging and culturally relevant cinema."

"It makes sense for our industries to join forces so that we can raise our game even further. A co-production treaty would create the means to do this."

exactly what I said earlier....Thanks for the insider response.

rowan 04-04-2005 07:07 PM

One of my sites is still getting a bunch of hits from SE's for (mostly) Indians looking for videos of one of their popular actresses taking a bath. The speaking English bit is not wrong, these are the language logs...

470 (95%) English (en)
5 (1%) Malay (ms)
4 (0%) French (fr)
3 (0%) Hindi (hi)
3 (0%) Arabic (ar)
1 (0%) Thai (th)
1 (0%) Tamil (ta)
1 (0%) Norwegian (no)
1 (0%) Japanese (ja)
1 (0%) Icelandic (is)
1 (0%) Dutch (nl)

At the moment this traffic is useless. I pop a console to one of my TGPs (which is where that log is from) but the prod is fairly tame.

Are there any Indian celeb sites? :Graucho

Hey Mpegmaster,

Interesting to see anyone who is actually from India. How is DSL developing there? From what I've *heard* broadband Internet is just making it's appearance in India. Is this true and how expensive is it?

Also, would you think dialer billing is a reasonable alternative for cc payments?

Thanks for your input. :upsidedow
