Mac Mini will be my first Apple I think

Anyone have it yet?

Is it *really* silent, and is 256 RAM enough for a few IE windows, a text editor and maybe a photo editor open at the same time?

Nice little machine, but you are going to want some more RAM.. 512mb would help a bit and 1024mb would be great..

The ones I have used have been silent, except for the harddisk which is almost silent..

megatgpdotnet 04-03-2005 01:15 PM

Yeah, looks great, especially when you can run Linux on it! :)

I had trouble getting the sound working when I tried installing debian on one.. And the Apple Wireless doesn't work with linux, but I didn't expect it too..

If you're going to use it as a desktop, you'll need to pump up the ram to a gig.
I have one and it sits in the cupboard at the end of the corridor - it is now the heart of the family LAN. Airpot express is plugged in in the lounge and the kids bedrooms and it plays everyones music to each stereo in the various rooms wirelessly.

The kids love it being able to play music from their puter to their stereos - they loved it more when they could pump out tunes from their own puter to the other one's bedroom, but a simply config hack put a stop to that (the final straw was them pumping out some shite on teh lounge stereo while I was watching the footy!)

Nathan 04-03-2005 01:49 PM

Uhm.. running linux on a mac? You all realize that Mac OSX is based on BSD right? Why friggin put linux on a mac if it comes with a better operating system base than that anyway? You can compile all unix apps on it anyway, so why bother?

I'm with you Nathan, and with XFree, any GUI that isn't ported to mac will run just fine under XFree :thumbsup

edit: oops, forgot, BSD isn't Linux, so maybe the reason lies there :uhoh

tahiti 04-06-2005 01:15 PM

just upgrade the RAm, the conf will be fine
