Any of you photographers made your own backdrops?
im thinking about buying some muslin and dying it. i need some basic backdrops to toy around with. what will i get the most use from? grey? white? black?

This is one of those things where the amount of time and effort you are going to put in isn't worth it.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...rch&Q=&ci=4899 10 X 12 for $80... your time has to be worth more than $80 to make one of these things... 10 X 24 for under $150 Don't you have better things to do with your time? Alex |
thanks for the link alex

I hope you're not thinking about shooting porn in front of a backdrop. That went out 20 years ago, except in Russia where it's still seems to be the way to shoot.
Wonder why those guys never sell anything................. |
I did it years ago when I first started, but I used it only once. I've never even used the content I shot with it. What I recommend is assembling "sets". A desk, couch, tree... a modern chair from Scandinavian Designs, lamps, etc. Make it look like a nice place to live. I'd say stay away from backdrops because they don't inspire much photographic creativity.

We dont use backdrops but make all of our own sets. We have about 20.

correct. create any "backdrop" you want with lighting and DOF. (open up your lens) |

But here is a good tip. Buy a painter's drop cloth. Dig around in your garage and get some old paint. Hang the drop cloth outside. Fling multiple colours of paint on the cloth. There you have a backdrop for years to come. |
lol, yes it certainly is!

I wish I didn't have to endure all that work just to get that background! My point is, backdrops look like backdrops. Location, location, location!!! But not too many content providers can afford exotic locations or endure the effort required to shoot there. In my not so humble opinion, painting your studio, house, backdrop (fake walls) will change the shot enough for most viewers. Going the extra mile will work for the more jaded, seasoned, or sophisticated audience. But then again, using top notch never before seen great talent helps too. |
