Hard Drive Failure or is XP fucked up?

I bragged about my $699 HP laptop but not anymore.

Had files I couldn't open so I ran "check Disk" and then the files worked so it looked like I had a hard drive problem; but then I coudn't boot up my laptop later that day. It did boot half way(really slow like 1 hour) and then crashed.

I finally got XP to reinstall and got everything working again but still having problems.

I booted up today and it failed saying windows/system32/config(I think) was corrupted or missing; but 2 secs later I tried again and it worked fine.

I can't figure if I'm having hard drive failure or if I just have a messed up XP config.

I guess the only option is to reformat and see if the problem persists

Ya, I re-formatted and that seemed to work but something is still out of wack.

backup your files now, it just may be the harddrive. mine went a few months ago and it just got wacky like you are saying. see if you can boot and run the machine from a cd with xp on it.

if your having problems this early with the laptop. don't hesitate to return it right away.

its a lemon.

HP is notorious for problems..If it is new get rid of it

that is a hardware related issue.

back up your data and have the vendor fix the problem
they promised warranty so, enjoy it

HP laptop? Take it back to the shop then get your money back and run like the wind. :2 cents:

I'd never heard that HP were crap... does that include Compaq or are they still essentially run as separate companies?

(I had an 8 year old Compaq laptop stolen and since the insurance policy is full replacement I'll be getting a brand new one)
