After serving one month of his second term, Abraham Lincoln was shot the night of April 14, 1865, and died the following morning at 7:00 AM. An actor, John Wilkes Booth, 27, shot Lincoln at close range in the back of the head at Ford's Theater in Washington. The assassination occurred just six days after the end of the Civil War. Booth was shot and killed when found hiding in a barn a few miles outside of Washington.
