Man To Be Prosecuted For Killing Though Body Has Not Been Found


Prosecutors think Isabel Rodriguez's remains are on a ranch at the edge of the Everglades, but two intense searches did not turn up any traces.

Rodriguez's lawyers think that the fact that the body has not been found will create doubt for jurors. They said investigators used K-9 dogs and infrared technology and found nothing.

Witnesses for the prosecution said Rodriguez had a big fire burning next to farm buildings the day his wife disappeared, so the trial may hang on gruesome questions, such as how long a body takes to burn.

Rodriguez's lawyers went to a crematory to observe a body actually being burned with an eye toward disproving the theory that Rodriguez burned his wife's body.

A crematory furnace, fueled by natural gas, reaches temperatures between 1,600 and 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit, which are temperatures difficult to reach outdoors with wood as fuel, experts said.
