YARGH! Web usability! A serious post from a goofy pirate.
It's an old book but if you do anything web related you should read: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...199785-5738333 A lot of designers, and program owners would benefit from applying simple web usability concepts. So many sites are poorly designed from a user standpoint. Whenever I have a new site built, or redesign an existing site. I always ask friends/surfers to take a look, and comment. This information is invaluable. Some things that seem so obvious to you, are not even noticed by average users. You designed it, so you are aware of what *you* think users should be clicking on, looking at, etc. You may be surprised to find out they aren't noticing what you thought would be *so* obvious. Order this book, and read it. It's a small investment that will payoff quite nicely. Please send any flames to Theo http://www.xsitespinner.com/theo.jpg Pirate mode re-enabled: YARGH! Where's me pegelg wax, Club me parrot, Treasure me booty! YARGH! that's better. |
YARGH! Looks Usefull. I like this quote from the reviews:
1. Don't make me think: Basically the web user does not want to venture into a site that requires them to figure it out. It should be self-evident. How do we use web pages: a. We don't read pages, we scan them b. We don't make optimal choices, we satisfice c. We don't figure out, how things work, we muddle through 2. It doesn't matter how many times I click as long as each click is a mindless unambiguous choice 3. Get rid of half the words on each page, then get rid of half of what's left. |

I readed about usability from Jakob Nielsen. It just open you mind for something different. I think this stuff can help marketing a lot, for example, driving the surfer attention for convertion. In my oppinion, the adult sites are very very well succeded in this point, just what the paysite tours for example. When done with some usability aspecs, the tour will converts more, no matter what. Thereīs many reliable source of usability online, Itīs a "must read" if you are trying to make money from the web. - Good pirate Good thread! Bum for that thread! |
