Oil prices have entered the early stages of trading that could lead to a 'super spike' with the potential to move prices to $105 per barrel, enough to meaningfully reduce energy consumption, according to a Goldman Sachs analysis.
The call, which would mean a possible doubling of oil prices from their current level, sent crude back above $55 per barrel for the first time in a week. The contract for May delivery was last quoted up 2.4 percent at $55.30, having earlier touched a high of $55.55.
'The strength in oil demand and economic growth, especially in the United States and China, following a year of $40-$50 per barrel WTI oil has surprised us... The reason for this adjustment in view is that persistent high prices are improving the financial position of key oil exporting countries and could serve to keep potential revolution at bay,' said analyst Arjun Murti.

Actually, the article I posted raised a very interesting question re market evolution. In economics, whenever demand for a commodity reaches such a high point that it becomes crushing to the buyers, ALTERNATIVE commodities' prices start going down... permanently. Maybe oil hitting $105 will finally trigger an IRREVERSIBLE trend towards hybrid and almost ZERO EMISSIONS vehicles.

Yes, there's probably is. The last thing they want is a demand for energy efficient cars.

LOL. The structural/long-term trends the Goldman Sachs analyst discussed in the article look strong enough to make energy efficient cars the new standard... Why am I not surprised that the auto industry is kicking and screaming. It put up the same fight re air bags until the MARKET dictated it.

Toyota are bringing out hybrid versions of all their major models.. there's an article in the current Wired magazine. There's a Lexus version out shortly, although the mileage isn't as good as the Prius

Those diesel engine mods for bio-diesel kick ass. You still start with gasoline but 90% will be switched over to bio-diesel. Since many restaurants give away their cooking grease, that's free 90% fuel. I don't know if there's any publicly-traded engine model companies. If there aren't--there should be. :thumbsup

if it does, it'll REALLLLY suck... but, it'll also cause the Canadian Oil Sands to start producing, which should limit the effect....
