Are any sponsors going to take advantage of the Euro?
 

As the magic hour for the Euro grows very near, I was wondering if any sponsors were considering alternative billing in Euros or even paying out in Euros?

P.S. I can't spell...which is the reason for edits.

I don't really see a point in sponsors paying out in Euro, since most of them (even non-US sponsors) pay in US dollar anyway... why should they switch ? If a sponsors for example paid in Deutsche Mark, well then they better switch over, cuz you won't be able to use it anyway...

Well, I am in the UK which is staying with the pound but I am still part of Europe and frankly we will be Euro soon enough. Not to mention it would be a lot easier to cash and bank a check in Euros than it is for dollar checks. Lots of British shops are going to take Euros even though we still have the pound.

I wasn't suggesting switching over as much as I was wondering if any of them were going to look at running a side by side thingie. As now it will be a lot easier then if they were doing it by individual currency, which was frankly impossible.

I know a lot of British people, for example, who won't buy things on the net that are priced in dollars because they don't really have a mental idea of the actual cost. So, they think they are being ripped off.

Many people think that if they'd get paid in Euro and not in USD the fees to cash in a check would be gone ... well, I hate to burst their bubble but this ain't true http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/biggrin.gif

US sponsors send checks from US banks, so if the currency on it is USD or some other currency, it doesn't matter, your bank will still charge you the same fee cos they have to cash the check at that US bank, just like they're doing now.

In my opinion the entire Euro thing is the biggest ripoff that could possibly happen to Europe... according to statistics everything (and I mean everything) is gonna be more expensive after the the switch to the Euro.

Besides: Did anyone know that there is not going to be "German beer" or "Cheese from Holland" anymore ? You don't get it, right ?

Well, the new rule for all participating countries says that companies with certain advertizement slogans involving the country won't be able to use them publicly anymore. So instead of "German Pilsner" on a beer bottle it will have to say "European Pilsner" - why ? I don't fucking know. Supposedly it will help the international trade... On the other hand this is exactly why many states do not want to participate in the Euro, like the Czech Republic. Since there are many products that are know worldwide (as Bohemian glass etc.), they do not want to lose grounds by getting rid of the name that has been popular for ages.

Sjayne, I don't really think that the UK is going to be extremely pumped up about introducing the Euro on a board scale. There must be a reason why kingdoms like Denmark, Sweden, Norway and the UK refuse to get the Euro. Must be an identity thing I assume.

Well, we are suppose to have a referendum sometime in the nearish future to decide if we are going into the common currency. We are already part of the EU.

Trust me, the government wants us in the Euro. The only way we won't go in is if something happens and the Torries get back into goverment. Frankly they did enough damage to let Labour stay in another couple terms until we are just as sick of them.

My husband often talks about when the British went to decimialisation in the 70's and lost the schilling and got the pence and the such. He said that some shopkeepers took advantage of the confusion with the new money to raise prices.

I am sure the same thing will happen and I will miss changing into local currency when I travel. However, on the other hand it is making planning my week in Belgium a lot easier.

Oh and Alek..who pays in Euros?

Worste thing about the Euro is that it LOOKS like my income drops 220% next tuesday.. damn ;-)
But for me.. Euro.. well it's like shit.. it happens if ya like it or not... and I defintly wouldn't mind if drops 10% ;-))

I have no choice, American Express runs the show at whatever bank there is. I did look for a better deal but everywhere - Barclays, HSBC, Halifax, etc, has those damn "$X per check" fees. I did try Llyod's TSB a few months back, as they could cash as many a I could bring in for only $8. It all fell to pieces when the manager told me that they lost their rights to do this a few weeks prior. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/frown.gif

The only choice is Citibank, but that's not very helpful as they only have six branches across the country, five of them in London. This sucks.
