At what point is a home considered a "Mansion" ?

i've seen some pics of some really great homes some of you here have, and to me i would consider them to be a 'mansion" and not a "house" :)

is there some kind of critieria that is used to determine when a house is no longer a large home but a mansion ?

good question... not sure if there is a definitive answer as to what is considered a 'mansion' like there is for what is considered a 'yacht' vs 'boat'

i personally think a it becomes a mansion when it is entirely too much space for the amount of people living there

Napolean 03-30-2005 09:16 PM

id say anything more than 5 rooms, and 3+ bathrooms

i mean... thatd be luxury enough for me

edit: my birthdays in june for all who want to donate :thumbsup

that isn't always true though, cause our new place is 3 bedroom, 3 bath, living room, den, dining room, etc....and it is far from a mansion...even if we added 2 more bedrooms to the mix it wouldn't be close

many apartment buildings in thailand are called mansions

"Sethiwan Mansion" "Thanatip Mansion" "Worraveet Mansion"... and these are low budget to medium budget places too... so the word when used in thailand doesnt mean squat.. or maybe it means something different to them

maybe its a square footage thing then?

I think when you're in the 10,000+ sq ft range you can definitely consider it a mansion. I consider 5,000-10,000 sq ft homes to be junior mansions :)

Napolean 03-30-2005 09:25 PM

MANSION.: This term is synonymous with house. (q. v.) 1 Chit. Pr. 167; 2 T. R. 502; 1 Tho. Co. Litt. 215, n. 35; 9 B. & C. 681; S. C. 17 E. C. L. R. 472, and the cases there cited; Com. Dig. Justices, P 5; 3 Serg. & Rawle, 199. A portion only of a building may come under the description of a mansion-house. 1 Leach, 89, 428; 1 East, P. C. C. 15, s. 19. 2 Bouv. Inst. n. 1571, note.
