These contest threads promise you winnings that you can't win

Look at all these contest threads... "win $10,000 in this thread", "$2000 contest thread", "win over $2400 in this thread" and so on.

Meanwhile you look inside and you can maybe win $1000 for top poster, or $500, or $400.... maybe get $100 if you're lucky enough to get the 500'th post or something.

Is there a chance that I can go in there and actually win $10k?? No.

Seriously people, if you're spending all your time trying to win $400 by May 1st (over a month from now), perhaps your energies are ill focused. If you can't do some honest work and make more than $400 between now and May 1st, there's something seriously wrong.

Don't get me wrong, the contest threads are cool and all, but just very misleading. And people I've never heard of are all over those threads racking up a huge post count and a little bit of money and have probably never done an honest day's work in their life... ie. a teenage surfer at home using his dad's net connection.

DutchTeenCash 03-30-2005 07:38 AM

wel a psp or an ipod is always cool :) but 10k? did I miss that thread?

Spunky 03-30-2005 07:39 AM

It is starting to get ridiculous..I counted 7..

FunForOne 03-30-2005 07:41 AM

The contests are about to go away. The cheating is so bad. They are not even trying to hide it anymore.

I think you would be surprised just how much some people are winning in those threads spread out over numerious usernames.

Spunky 03-30-2005 07:44 AM

Contests are cool if everybody had a chance to win.too bad it's starting to get out of control...I can see why Lens closes them

I am about to quit fucking with all together.

but I can right now, I'm stuck, I starting fucking around in them and thought I could get some cash with not to much effort. It turned out to be harder than I thought. I'm fighting the bird in the hand deal right now and still trying to finish this month out.

Rui 03-30-2005 07:49 AM

Lots of cheating going on, plus most contests are boring as hell and consist only in post-whoring...

I used to be able to pick the brains of some people while posting in those contest. I"ve made more money from the help I got than from anything I won.

Not anymore, you cant read them fast enough.

I like bouncing boobies also.

What would think about someone who is not elible to win a prize in the thread, but continues to post over 400 times in the same thread?

I'm not saying they are cheating, but I cant understand that logic.

polish_aristocrat 03-30-2005 08:00 AM

I like contests where you win f.e $50 or $100 for making f.e the 200th post in it.

When you come on GFY and see that such contest will have the winning post in 10 minutes, then you can post there and try to win - nothing wrong with it and that can be even fun.

But I hate contests where there is a prize for the most posts in a thread, because then you have people posting 3.5k posts in one ( ! ) single thread, as the current big Pussy Cash contest thread proves.

swedguy 03-30-2005 08:03 AM

Contests are overrated :)

Cains 03-30-2005 08:05 AM

I don't actually post in contests unless I've joined the program. Otherwise it just seems to be people post-whoring who have no plans to actually use GFY as a webmaster resource

It looks like that is true.
Isn't that against the rules

FunForOne 03-30-2005 08:09 AM

I think its funnier when you see the contestents that have only posted in contest threads. Nothing else. No website, obviously not in the adult industry.

Then you see they have GFY refferals.

Anyone want to explain that?

Yes, and a few have been caught + exposed right here ...

cool1 03-30-2005 08:12 AM

True and I am sure if there are more they will be exposed too.

StuartD 03-30-2005 08:13 AM

It's really pretty smart by the contest starters, look at how many of them are over that $2400 mark. Not many really.

How much does it cost for advertising on GFY? $2500/month? $3000/month??

The newest AFF thread is giving away $2000 in their thread, spread out over many people for over 1 month. That's getting BETTER advertising than having a banner, and it's costing them less for a longer period of time.

Smart.

The people runninng the contest could weed out most of the cheaters with a few simple rules but they donīt seem to care they just want the exposure.

I dropped doing the contests where you have finish in the top of the poster list its impossible to win some people isnīt doing anything but posting in the contest thread.

The problem is that most of the sponsors are way to busy to worry about catching cheaters. Once people like you and other realy webmasters stop playing along and the cheaters are the only ones left, they will probably do something.

Exactly thats why they have the contests :)
But look at the digibucks thread I have been posting in it for a couple of weeks now trying to get it to 10K so I can get the prizes I won and there are some cool webmaster prizes in it but we are only a few people posting in it make you wonder how many of the people playing in the contests are webmasters.

Michael O 03-30-2005 08:26 AM

I obviously like the contest I make a little $$ and have some fun doing it and I would like them to stay but the rules needs to be tighten.
Rules like you have to post an url where you promote the program and the whois have to be the same as on your account or you have to send a sale or traffic to the program..
Things that will weed out the cheaters but the problem is the sponsors donīt care if its Joe Webmaster or Bob Surfer that wins they just want the exposure plenty of examples of that.

cool1 03-30-2005 08:28 AM

I don't play for the top poster part of the contests,
cause the top posters part is too easy to cheat in.
Anyone could set it up with a couple of people and then do noting but post until they are assured the win.

I just play for the post number spot wins.
with those it doesn't matter how many people are playing to win.
the more the better.
I do not need to cheat to win.
I only play cause the contests are here (can't pass up a chance at free money)and I love contests.

LadyMischief 03-30-2005 08:30 AM

Can't agree with you more, Stu :) If you have to scramble over yourself to win a measley few hundred bucks in some whore thread or something similarly silly, perhaps you need to reasess your focus in the industry.

You make a good point. If you told me that I had to post 500 times for 200 bucks I wouldn't do it. But you look up and your 25 post away from 200 bucks, I will do that. Problem is that you are 25 away every time you check the board.

Basic_man 03-30-2005 08:47 AM

I agree, those contest post are time wasting more than anything !

Thats not to bad considering the first prize was a trip from anywhere in the world to Miami, 3 days hotel stay, ticket to the show, dinner with 2 hotties and $500 spending money :)

The other one is crazy since first place is and Ipod and a couple hundred cash.

Well, the theory is that page views goes way up and thus ad rates can be increased, but I don't think it applies so much to GFY as it does other boards.
The ad rates here would remain as they are with or without the extra posts from contest threads.

It's just crazy to know that some people make more posts in one thread than most make in a year.

sickkittens 03-30-2005 09:22 AM

I'm also willing to bet that alot of the same people post in all of those threads. :winkwink:

Only reason I have that number of posts is I won $500, a year of statsremote, pinned hall of fame spot for two days on prettyhotbabes.com and 4 big thumbs rotating for a week on prettyhotbabes.com

But I wonīt get it before the thread reaches 10K :)

Ofcause it is I think its the same 20 people taking 80% of the prizes in all the contests :)
I think I won $2.5-3K worth of prizes and cash over the last 2 months so ofcause I spend a little time on it. If I never won or won very little I wouldnīt bother playing :)

I wouldn't even waste my time posting 25 times for a measly 200

The SilverCash Scavenger Hunt was a good model for a nice contest. More programs should do the same, a contest where there is affiliate involvement and program knowledge determining the winners.

Not everyone can be a big timer like you with loads of money.
For some people its nice with a little extra they can use on fun stuff.
