The truth about Johnnie Cochran

I just read a news article where his family made a statement saying "he had never lost touch with the common man".

There is a lot of truth in this. After the OJ trial a woman friend of mine discovered - much to her surprise - that she was married. It turned out that it was a scam where they brought people into the US, got them married using fake ID, and they got their US citizenship.

Johnnie Cochran got wind of her case. She couldn't afford an an attorney, so he took her on for free because the case was "interesting". My friend got a rather large settlement, and Cochran never took a penny.

It's sad that these are the stories you never hear about. Most people will remember him only as the "lawyer that let OJ go free."

Thanks for sharing.

OJ made an interesting comment... that he saw him at a basketball game a couple months ago and he was in "high spirits" .... but I havent' heard anybody mention anything about the "natural causes" ... was he sick?

Corona 03-30-2005 01:47 AM

According to his family it was an inoperable brain tumor.

latinasojourn 03-30-2005 01:53 AM

certainly Johnnie Cochran is a gifted attorney.

but let's put things in perspective.

i'm convinced he knew OJ was guilty of killing two people.

and for a few million dollars he perpetuated a falsehood.

he does not deserve sainthood.

everybody deserves the right to a fair trial, and thats what he argued. He's not a bad person in my books for being a brilliant lawyer.

it doesn't matter if you're convinced or not

it matters to the jury, who saw a HELLUVA lot more evidence than you did

he was given a fair trail, and was found "not guilty"

anybody who has a hate-on for Johnny Cochrane because of the Simpson case is more than likely a bigot. Cochrane did his job, that's how the whole legal system is set up, the burden of proof is on the prosecution to prove a man guilty beyond reasonable doubt, the defense attorney's duty is to vigorously as possible provide the jury or judge that reasonable doubt to defend his client. He did his best WITHIN the law to do his job. The jury and the system failed - not Johnny Cochrane. There was no reasonable doubt in this case - the whole world knows this. Johnny Cochrane knew it.

I don't know if you could call it fair.
It was me against Marsha Clark....that's kind of like Lennox Lewis fighting Stephen Tackacs......but yeah, he was found not guilty.

True. Plus, by Cochran suing the LAPD so damn much, you have to admit, it did result in some positive procedural changes for the LAPD.
