Clive McLean Passes Away

CHATSWORTH, Calif. - AVN Hall of Fame photographer and director Clive McLean passed away about 2:30 this morning after a battle with cancer.

McLean had been a fixture at LFP and Hustler for the past 29 years, photographing nearly every recognizable starlet in adult during his tenure as Senior Photographer. In addition to his magazine layouts, he began directing videos six years ago, taking the reins of Hustler Video?s Barely Legal series. The 2004 AVN Award-winning Best Vignette seriesreached its 50th edition last year and has long been the best-selling line in the company's arsenal.

McLean, a former art school student who earned his degree in graphic design and journalism in the 1960s, had said that directing allowed him to finish a visual story. ?As a photographer, you always say it would be nice if I had a couple more pages,? he said. ?It alleviates a little frustration because I can complete a story, even though it usually always end up with a facial.?

McLean also directed the girl/girl series Hot Showers and has helmed a handful of Barely Legal spin-offs such as Barely Legal On Vacation, Barely Legal in the City and Barely Legal Summer Camp.

McLean is survived by his wife of 11 years and "right-hand woman," Erica, who worked closely with him on every aspect of production, prompting him to say in a 2003 interview with AVN that she is "the dynamo behind the jewel." Their production company is called Rubber Duck, Inc.

The London native that was known as an approachable, good-natured man was the subject of a nationally televised profile on American Movie Classics called "The AMC Project: I Want to Be Clive McLean" last year. The program, which also included profiles on mainstream entertainment figures, was advertised in the July 2003 issue of Vanity Fair.

The original Barely Legal initially did not make for the easiest sell, McLean told AVN in an exclusive interview for the February 2002 cover story about the emergence of Hustler Video.

?It was a big yawn as far as distributors were concerned,? he said in December of 2001. ?It only went out the door at 700-800, not really good. We had no sales people. But the repeat orders were absolutely astronomical on No. 1. We had 28,000 repeat orders.?

McLean also appeared last year at the beginning of the PBS "Frontline" documentary on the industry called "American Porn." He was inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame in 2001.

A true pioneer in the world of erotica.

I met him a couple of times and he was a very energetic and funny guy.

I once brought a model to him years back.
She was brand new, never shot with any mags.
I was explaining to him that since she was new, she barely knew what a "pink" shot was and that she won't do toys, boys etc...

He just stopped me in mid sentence and said "Shit, don't worry! We're HUSTLER! We INVENTED this shit!"

I'm really sorry to see him go.

I just got off the phone with his widow Erica. She said that he was her hero.

For me:

He was the best of the best as a photographer, as a person.

He always made me laugh.

He always made light & fun of a situation.

He had insane energy.

He always defended me, except for when he fought with me - and then he was fierce and fought hard for what he believed in.

First 5 minutes after I met him I said to his wife Erica - "Clive has one of the strongest personalities I've ever seen." She laughed at me for what she already knew.

He was assigned by Hustler to give me photography advice... so he told me: "Don't shoot into the sun!!!" which I do alot.

He was the greatest person in porn... and one of the greatest I ever met in life...

I will miss him greatly... and laugh wildly as he did... as I shoot into the sun.

I met Clive Mclean a couple years ago when Ramona started shooting for Hustler, he was the first person to shoot her for Hustler Magazine and then shot us togther for Barely Legal #32, he opened the door the world of Hustler for both me and Ramona Luv. I also shot my girl Celeste Star for the March 2005 Edition for the cover and the Centerfold.

I would like to thank Clive for always being very nice and respectful to both me and Ramona, Ramona and I both consider him and his wife Erika good friends of ours in this crazy industry.

I would like to send my deepest regards to Erika Mclean and the Mclean family. Clive will always be missed by those of us that were fortunate enough to know and work with him. God Bless Your Soul!!!!!!!!!
