Ever get a charlie horse so bad you wanted to die?

I woke up, stretched my legs then a massive pool ball sized lump formed in my calf and pain so intense I started screaming OUCH KILL ME NOW PLEASE OUCH!!!

My GF had to massage it out, She was freaking out too. We've never seen a lump so damn big before.

My leg now feels like it's burning at times.

I researched charlie horses a bit today and it turns out what happens is a large chunk of muscles RIPS away from the larger mass causing it to curn. the body's natural reaction is to flex the damaged part which causes even more pain. A pool of blood then forms in the damaged area and that's what causes the burning.

i usually get them after not stretching properly before working out

I used to get charly horses & leg cramps quite often, due to one of my medications robbing my body of potassium. I found that if I get enough potassium in my diet now, that I very rarely get them anymore. So, I make it a daily ritual to either eat a bowl of raisin bran or drink an 8 ounce glass of o.j. each day. Both are high in potassium and a quick fix to the problem. :)

I started some asthma medicine that one of the side effects are severe muscle cramps but the chances you get them are small..well not small enough for me.
It started in my right calf, I jumped up off the couch and then both feet started cramping, then my left calf, then my right quad, I was stuck for 30 minutes standing in my living room while family ran and got me some pain pills, and rubbed ben gay all over my lefts...I really thought my muscles were gonna rip in two...never been through something so painful.

I never knew they were called charlie horses

oh man Eros, that sounds horrible. just this one pool ball sized rip was enough tow ant me to die, I could not image what you went through.

I get them all the time in the middle of the night. Sounds like mine usually aren't as severe as yours - I just stand up and move the leg around and it goes away after 2 minutes or so. Painful as hell though.

To give you folks an idea of what it looked like I just grabbed a calf pic and photoshopped it to what it looked like to me on my own leg. pretty much identicle.

Water And Potasum Will Cure This ..i Played College Football For 4 Years Ive Had Them So Bad I Had To Have A Shot Of Potasm Directly Into The Muscle

I do not get them much anymore, but when I did, it was during sex, or middle of the night sleeping. Nothing like waking up out of a sound sleep screaming your bloody head off.

the best thing to do is to flex your foot upwards, never downwards, force the calf muscle to stretch and extend and hold it that way till the cramp subsides.

I've had some bad ones but not all that bad

kowntafit 03-31-2005 03:38 AM

i think you should do some leg exercises or even jogging. and try to raise your leg a little higher during sleep. it relaxes the leg muscles.
