Is phpbb good to use for a message board?
 

Since its free I am wondering if I should use it. You get what you pay for they say.

I'd agree with you on the "you get what you pay for" bit, but with opensource software, it really doesn't apply.
I've used it, and it works well.
There were some nasty exploits, but as far as I know they have been fixed.

It's good for small boards. vBulletin I hear is much better and less vulnerable.

Go with a cgi board like Yabb, because it is harder to hack.

I like my phpBB. :)

give it a shot, cant beat free. worst case scenario, you change it for another, most of the ones out there have conversion tools so you dont loose your current forums & threads.

phpBB2 had some problems but they have been fixed as far as i know. I use it its sweet forum software. Although, vB is fucking 20 times better. Yeah its true you get what you pay for.

phpbb get hacked quite often. use SMF. It's super secure. www.simplemachines.org

last time i've looked into this, couple month before now, phpbb didnt support php5, other than that its a great product.

As you said its free but you will have to patch it like everyweek.
